  • Tomb Raider: Underworld – pre-order goodie
By admin on November 10th, 2008 | No Comments Comments

I find most of the pre-order bonuses garbage most of the time. T-shirts, caps and key chains are pretty useless in my opinion. But some games do offer useful bonuses such as LittleBigPlanet’s exclusive costumes, which I made a huge and irreversible mistake by pre-ordering it 2 days too late! I was checking out EBGames.com and I found the soon-to-be-released Tomb Raider: Underworld comes with a nicely packaged art book (looks like hardcover based on image from EBGames.com). I’m a fan of collecting game art books (I’ve also bought the Final Fantasy X-2 and 12 art books as well) by the way. I’m really a sucker for these books i guess.

Apparently there is also a demo available for the PC incase any of you are interested.

  • Dead Space – PlayStation 3 review

Silent Hill: Homecoming was somewhat disappointing mainly because of its outdated graphics. I know it is not sufficient to judge a game solely based on game play. Although new elements were added to the game such as new combat system and new item/weapon navigations. And I was not happy with the new navigations by the way because you can waste your healing item, mainly the serum which heals you completely, by accidentally move your L3 button and have it selected without even knowing. The game play was kind of expected and I was really hoping for graphics that are next-gen. Ok, enough ranting and time to move on.

Dead Space generated a lot, and I mean A LOT of hype with all the animated trailers, comics and game trailers. Does this game live up to all the hype generated? I would, with no doubt say YES.

    Story and controls
The story is about a repair ship which crash landed on a large mining ship called ISHIMURA. And as you can imagine, all the horror begins here and almost right away. Some of the controls are rather different from say, Call of Duty, like in order to run, you need to press L3 (move) and L2. The new controls might take a while to get used to but nothing major. If you have been keeping up with your first/third person shooting skills, the aiming should not be a problem either. Again make sure you aim the hands and legs and not the body unless you want to waste ammo. You can also treat your gun as a melee weapon at close range as well as pressing L2 for some foot stamping.

    Game play and graphics
Dead Space uses a new and innovative user interface for accessing your items, weapons, map and missions etc. Its actually a holographic screen that is projected right in front of you in real time. So for example, you can have the map up and move around at the same time. So far I though, I can’t feel the “survival” part of this game because you get lots of ammo and healing items, I’ve picked up so many that I have to put them in the safe. (I’m playing on normal not easy by the way) Finally, safe points are in many places so I don’t really have to worry about having to restart from far back.

Speaking of which, there is also a store which you can buy healing items, upgrade your suit, called the Rig which increases the amount of items you can store as you go, new weapons, power nodes which are for upgrading your Rig’s max health(which is your health) and your weapons’ damage, ammo capacities etc. Weapon upgrades using the power nodes are performed by accessing another system called Upgrade Bench.

There is also something called Stasis, similar to the “Force” in Star Wars, in which you can manipulate objects by slowing them down or throwing them etc. Nothing new but you need them to solve some of the puzzles as you progerss through the game. And if you ever get stuck, simply press the R3 and a thin line will appear to show you which way you are suppose to go next based on your mission.

Even though both Silent Hill:Homecoming and Dead Space are survival horror, the former doesn’t really make you jump like Dead Space does. Being a survival horror fan for so many years, I’m pretty used to all the scare moments but I was constantly on my toes while playing Dead Space and got a few jumps actually. And finally this game supports the Trophy Collection.

First thing first, I’m sure everyone would want to know about this, YES the game supports 1080p high definition video output. Strangely it defaults to 720p similar to Call of Duty 4. It will only output to 720p unless you explicitly set your console, in my case PlayStation 3 to only output 1080p. And speaking of graphics, it is VERY graphical with tons of blood and body parts all over walls, floors, windows and anywhere you can imagine.

Also just to mention there’s no online multiplayer component, it would be even better if there was but with this game, it doesn’t really matter because the single player is just that exciting. And besides, I’m not sure how you can design the multiplayer side based on the story, hmm maybe there could be two races, the humans and those mutated humans? Just a thought.

    Sound
Sound effects are top notch as well, you can hear random screams, objects banging onto other objects. One thing I dislike and makes this game a little bit less difficult and cuts some of the suspense is every time before monsters start coming at you, you will know because you will hear some “horror” noise. So whenever you hear it, you can pretty much expect to ready your limb cutting gun. But like I said before, I still managed to get a few scare from my 2 hours of play time.

    Final Verdict
Is this game worth the $59.99? I would definitely think so, at least I didn’t regret buying this game like I did with Silent Hill: Homecoming. For those looking for a sci-fi + survival horror and those that are into limb cutting, then Dead Space will be the game.

There may be a part 2 if I find anything that’s worth mentioning

    9/10

  • Quantum of Solace – Launch trailer
By admin on October 13th, 2008 | No Comments Comments
    Quantum of Solace

I’ve never played any of the previous Bond games, Quantum of Salace will very likely be my first. Using the Call of Duty 4 engine, the graphics are just impressive, if not better than Call of Duty 4. And judging from this trailer, while the game play certainly looks interesting and fast pace overall, though the AIs are quite stupid, they just stand there in the open and not taking cover. Speaking of taking cover, Quantum of Solace has also incorporated the cover system which Call Of Duty 4 lacks. You can also perform random blind shots “sprays” when taking cover. Similar to Far Cry 2, you can interact with the environment like killing enemies by blowing up inflammable objects. These features are nothing new but certainly great to have them all in one single game.
Will this beat the Golden Eye from years ago? We will have to wait and see. Again a demo would be nice!

Quantum of Solace will be out on November 4th on basically all platforms except PSP, which is strange seeing it will be released even for DS.

  • Fable 2 out on October 21st
By admin on October 13th, 2008 | No Comments Comments

Fable 2, another game that I wish would be available on the PlayStation 3, I’m hoping this will get ported over to the PC sometime after the XBox360 release. From the trailer both graphics specially the environments like grass and trees and physics have improved, I love the part where you can literally push/kick your enemies down a cliff but I can also see this may be overused since you can just push all of them down without using your weapons. Based on the trailer, the battle also looks like the same old hack and slash. When equiped with a gun, it looks like auto aim to me which hopefully can be turned off if that’s the case.

Oh well, I guess I will have Little Big Planet as well as Fallout 3 to keep me company until Fable 2 becomes available for PC.

  • Will Call of Duty: World at War kill Call of Duty 4?
By admin on October 11th, 2008 | No Comments Comments

Will Call of Duty: World at War kill Call of Duty 4? This question popped into my head while I was waiting for a COD4 game to start. After some “serious” thinking, my answer is….I’m not sure.

Call of Duty: World at War

Its yes and no, at least in my opinion. Its a yes because I think existing COD players may switch to the new game, permanently. As more people migrate to the new game, the COD 4 servers will not have as many players to start games. And you need a minimum of 6 players for a game to start unless you play 1v1, otherwise you will just be waiting. Also, unlike COD: WaW where 4 or less people is enough to get a game going in co-op mode which COD4 lacks. Again this is just my guess and I hope I’m wrong.

Call of Duty: World at War Collector's Edition

On the other hand, I also think both may be able to “co-exist” because they are two games taking places in two different time periods with one being in World War time and the other in modern days. Some people might still prefer the modern weapons/time period while some might jump the boat and play in the World War period. I personally prefer the modern days and the weapons. I don’t think there will be a red dot sight in World War 1/2, which makes it hard for me to aim. (yea I rely heavily on that to aim when I use a rifle like G36, unless I use a sub machine gun like P90) But even aiming wasn’t the problem, I still prefer modern time. Just a personal preference.

Either outcome will most likely NOT disappoint any of us COD fans. And again with the co-op feature, it will probably enhance rather than degrading the series. I hope a demo release will be out sometime in the end of October or first week of November (comes out in Nov 11th for US and 14th for Europe) so that we can have a better idea if this game is really worth the $59.99.

Just my daily thought and I will now continue on with my debate whether I should get this game or not. What are YOUR thoughts on this?

  • Diablo 3 – Wizard class revealed
By admin on October 11th, 2008 | No Comments Comments

Finally, another Diablo 3 trailer and this one reveals a new character class – Wizard. A female Wizard (she looks Asian and pretty attractive by the way!) shows off her cool but deadly magic spells and unleashes them upon the enemies. In fact, she looks a bit too strong against those enemies, probably her stats were tweaked for this demonstration? In the end of the trailer, looks like another boss enemy that looks pretty epic but not as epic as the one from a while ago that basically took up the whole screen.

There is no official released date announced yet but I searched around and most of the sites are still saying “TBA” (to be announced) but based on 1up, the release date is end of September of 2009, not sure how accurate it is.

I just hope my PC can handle all these fancy looking effects and man I can’t stop using the word epic these days….

Dead Space is out in less than a week, we are presented with yet another impressive animated comic movie trailer from Gametrailers.com. This month is going to be one busy AND expensive month for me with all these great games coming out.
