  • Mod Nation Racers – when LittleBigPlanet meets ...
By on June 3rd, 2009 | No Comments Comments

GameTrailers.com has been showing us loads and loads of E3 trailers, teasers, game plays or whatever you call them these days none stop for the past few days. While most of them look promising, I think this one in particular shines among the rest. Mod Nation Racers is the result of combining LittleBigPlanet and one of our all time favorite, Mario kart. While there are features that will immediately remind you of Mario Kart, like the power ups and the wide range of character customizations for your racers which resemble that of LittleBigPlanet. Sometimes copying other feature from different games and implementing them into a single game might actually work, and might be the case for Mod Nation Racers.

I think one of the biggest selling point of this game is the fact that you can create your own tracks (see trailer 2), something you cannot do in the Mario Kart series. This basically translates to infinite number of playable tracks, assuming people will love this game enough to create these custom tracks similar to LBP’s levels created by the players. If that’s the case, the replay value for the game will be extremely high.

The game’s customizations, track editor and the LBP feel all contribute to why I have high hopes for this game, which I’m guessing will be released some time next year. Which reminds me I should open up my PS3 and get the Blu-ray drive checked out, otherwise I will be missing out all the great games coming up even this year!

    LittleBigPlanet plush dolls

Ever since I saw the Snake and Sephiroth Sackboy plush dolls from Gametrailers.com, I had been wondering where these or any Sackboys are being sold. Play-Asia came to mind immediately and they actually have them but unfortunately they are “Out of print / Out of stock“. And they don’t have a huge selection either and all the plush dolls have the same skin color and differ by a few little things like an eye patch or sunflower hat etc.

The next place was ebay, hoping someone managed to get their hands on some, either through import or from Japan. And I got empty search results.

Come on, I don’t see why Sony and/or Media Molecule, the company that developed this amazing game wouldn’t want to monetize by selling these adorable plush dolls. I don’t want to sound like a girl but I think they are perfect for my car’s backseats or the back of the rear windshield!

LittleBigPlanet Metal Gear Solid Levels Pack LittleBigPlanet Metal Gear Solid Levels Pack LittleBigPlanet Metal Gear Solid Levels Pack

As promised, I bought these packs as my Christmas presents, well a bit too early but what the hell. I have purchased the two DLC packs for LittleBigPlanet – the Metal Gear Solid Premium Costume Pack and the Premium Level Pack. All I can say is its worth the money!

LittleBigPlanet Metal Gear Solid Levels Pack LittleBigPlanet Metal Gear Solid Levels Pack LittleBigPlanet Metal Gear Solid Levels Pack

As you know there are 5 Story Levels as well as 1 Challenge Level along with 6 costumes and a lot of objects, stickers etc. The first level is basically an intro, you don’t really get to do anything but the scene is nicely done. The second level is where the fun begins because you will get to play with THE PAINTINATOR. I think that’s basically the meat of the level pack and also a break through for LittleBigPlanet because its the first real weapon for LBP. This level will have you practice on non moving targets then move on to the harder, moving objects and dodge away from bullets (huge green balls), not too hard there. A HP meter is also introduced which I find it very innovative, for LBP that is. An enemy will have a HP meter so you will keep shooting it until its meter is empty. Again HP is nothing new in the gaming world in general but it is for this game.

The third level is where the actual “story” starts and you will fight your way through this level then progress to fourth and finally the fifth level is the boss level where you will get to fight a Metal Gear which in my opinion, beautifully designed. Its weapons are insane too as it will try and kill you with machine gun, rockets, lasers and the huge laser gun.

Overall the 5 levels are pretty shot, about 30 minutes or so, but extremely fun, even better if you play with friends. The Challenge Level, your goal is to surive as long as you can while you blast away the laser cannons on the ceiling. Again pretty fun if you play with others.

The costumes are also very detailed and really do resemble the characters from Metal Gear Solid. I personally like Raiden but I think Screaming Mantis has the most detailed features of all costumes. It even has the two hanging dolls behind (see screenshot).

I’m not sure about other packs, but these two packs are a definite must for MSG fans as well as LBP fans! Get them now! Treat yourself two special Christmas presents BEFORE Christmas!

And I look forward to more new levels with weapons in the future.

  • Metal Gear Solid DLC for LittleBigPlanet @ Dec 23!

Little Big Planet x Metal Gear Solid

Just when I thought there’s nothing special this month for my PS3, but PlayStation.Blog surprised me with news regarding two Metal Gear Solid Premium Packs available on the PlayStation Store on December 23rd. The Metal Gear Solid Premium Costume Pack will contain Snake’s costume, obviously, as well as costumes for Meryl Silverburgh, Screaming Mantis and Raiden. The costume pack goes for $5.99 or $1.99 each. I lied about getting the Street Fighter pack, but I AM pretty sure I will be getting this pack! I promise!

And that’s not all, there is also a Metal Gear Solid Premium Level Pack. This pack contains the Gurlokovich Soldier costume, plus 72 stickers, 12 materials, 10 decorations, 18 objects, 5 new Story Levels as well as 1 new Challenge Level. You would think wow that’s a lot of content, think again because there are more! You will also be getting (from PlayStation.Blog):

    - 3 new background music tracks
    - 1 new interactive music track
    - 1 new Metal Gear Solid themed ‘sound object’
    - New Plasma Ball ‘danger element’
    - New Laser Sight ‘gadget’
    - 12 new Trophies to unlock
    - New functioning Searchlight lamp – for those special ‘exclamation mark’ moments
    - …and finally, the piece de resistance…THE PAINTINATOR (and Paint Switch)

If you don’t want to purchase this level pack, you can still play this level by joining a host that has the level. Though you cannot obtain any items from the levels. Don’t be cheap and get it!

The best part is this level pack is only $5.99, consider the costume to be $0.99, you are paying $5.00 for 6 new levels along with tons of stickers, materials, objects, music tracks and my favorite of all, THE PAINTINATOR. This is pretty much the first “weapon” for LittleBigPlanet where you are actually holding something and shooting something from it, in this case paint. These levels and the THE PAINTINATOR will show what LittleBigPlanet can really do, the future is bright for this littlebiggame. (you read that right, littlebiggame)

I am really excited and looking forward to getting these two packs, guess these will be my Christmas presents. :)

And while we wait, please enjoy this beautifully done video of Metal Gear Solid x LittleBigPlanet levels, hands down to whoever designed this level.

  • LittleBigPlanet – PlayStation 3 review
    By on November 6th, 2008 | 1 Comment1 Comment Comments

So finally I got LittleBigPlanet yesterday, it was probably in the mailbox on Monday but I was too busy to check. I wanted to play a bit more before writing this review and the game was just too damn fun to let go of the controller last night. And I’m still trying to figure out how on earth to get my Nariko costume since my game didn’t come with the a card with the promotion code. I’ve sent an email to Futureshop and haven’t received a reply yet.

[update]:Turns out the promo was between Oct 3rd and Oct 9th, I pre-ordered mine on 11th, sigh. There goes my Nariko costume.

    Story and controls
There isn’t really a solid story for LittleBigPlanet, you will be exploring and venturing out in different places and planets. The controls are straight forward and easy to get used to. Basically you can jump (hold down to jump higher and further) and pull or push objects. There are also these new and interesting actions such as smile, frown, angry and scared, each with 3 levels, so you can smile lightly, bigger smile and a crazy smile all executed using the directional buttons. You can also make your sackboy or sackgirl’s head move based on your SIXAXIS controller as well as making their hands move using L2, R2, L3 and R3. Such innovative features really help bring emotion and expression to the sack people. And one more thing, you can drag your L3 or R3 real fast from left to right or right to left to perform slaps (at people obviously!), which I haven’t got bored of doing yet. Then again, when you are actually going through a level you most likely will be too occupied to even bother playing with the expressions.

    Gameplay, Graphics and physics
FUN, that’s the word that came to my mind when I played it for the first time. I found it particularly fun because I’ve used to play shoot’em up games for far too long, Call of Duty 4 for example, not that I’m complaining, I will never get bored of that game just that its just nice to play something that’s completely different for a change. Most of the time, this game is relaxing, but, maybe I just suck and/or impatient, I had to play some of the levels a few times before I could pass them in order to unlock the next area(s). I guess I should be glad that the game offers some level of difficulties, I mean after all, it won’t be fun if its too easy right?

littlebigplanet screenshot littlebigplanet screenshot littlebigplanet screenshot

This game is point based, meaning you get points by obtaining blue orbs. But that’s not very rewarding isn’t it? You can also obtain outfits, decorations, stickers etc. You can place stickers and decorations pretty much anywhere and sometimes they are used to solve puzzles to unlock more items. I believe one of the biggest selling feature of this game is the amount of outfits you can obtain and customize your sackboys or girls. You have the options to edit each part of your sackboys or girls such as head, face, back, neck, eyes, upper outfit, lower outfit etc. You can even choose to have the system randomly generate a look as well and you can imagine the number of combinations there can be as you obtain more outfits! You can save your look for a quick change as well as deleting them.

littlebigplanet screenshot littlebigplanet screenshot littlebigplanet screenshot

Graphics are top notch as well, I think the word I would use is, surreal. Its dreamlike and cartoonish but at the same time realistic with great lighting effects, vibrant colors and detailed textures of the surroundings. As mentioned before, the facial expression of your sackboys and girls are eye candies. Although it only supports up to 720p which most of us can probably not tell the difference between 1080p and 720p anyway so its not really an issue.

Aside from the normal beat-the-level kind of game, there are also challenges that you can unlock by obtaining keys. One example of challange will be to continuously jump up and down and get as many blue orbs (for points) as you can while avoiding the fire.

As you can see, this game packs TONS of features and I have yet to discover them all. I’ve had a chance to play a bit online last night and the online feature just makes this game easily worth 10 times more than the $59.99. You can play levels online with others (by the way some areas require others’ help to unlock) or you can play on your own. You can also pick the Quick Play option and you will be joining someone random and play whatever they are playing. The number of levels in LittleBigPlanet is pretty much infinite as long as people keep creating levels and sharing them, there will be new levels to play for as long as this game remains popular, which I am confident it will. You can also “hearted” your favorite levels and your friends on PlayStation Network can see them.

Aside from the graphics, the physics, yes this is my first time having a section, or rather one third of a section, dedicated to game physics. There are many obstacles through out the game, sometimes you will have to push or pull blocks in order to proceed to the next area. On the other hand you can, for example, be pulling a string left and right to shake the blue orbs or items down for you to obtain.

littlebigplanet screenshot littlebigplanet screenshot littlebigplanet screenshot

    Sound
So far I have heard many different types of music, some are up beat, some are spooky and some are down right classical. I also like the commentary that is spoken in English with British accent, just love that accent. There aren’t any other types of sound worth mentioning. Let me know if I’ve missed anything.

    littlebigplanet screenshot

    Final verdict
I’m pretty sure I have not tapped into everything about LittleBigPlanet, but as you can see, the amount of contents this game has is incredible. The amount of customization of your sack characters is one of the greatest feature this game has to offer, I think personalization is what makes a good game….a good game! With personalization you can have a unique presence instead of looking the same as other people. Unlike some of the games that mainly target specific groups of gamers, LittleBigPlanet suits all types of gamers, even non gamers in my opinion. Finally, the fact that you can create your own levels and share them with everyone else online makes this game even better. This is what I would call a Web 2.0 game, correct me if I’m wrong though. This was the complete review of LittleBigPlanet for more reviews or products visit Top9Rated.

Finally after Resistance, Heavenly Sword and Metal Gear Solid 4, the PlayStation 3 has another worthy exclusive game.

    9.5/10

  • LittleBigPlanet delayed again and content modified
By on October 20th, 2008 | No Comments Comments

Based on DailyTech LittleBigPlanet is being pushed back one more week and will be out on October 27th instead of this tuesday, as in tomorrow. I guess that explains why my pre-order got pushed back, but I pre-ordered mine in Futureshop.ca and will be shipped out Nov 3rd, that’s 2 weeks.

The reason for the delay is “due to references from the Muslim religious text the Qur’an found in the audio track. Similar delays are being implemented worldwide.” as stated in the article. One of the soundtrack in the game has also been or will be removed through online patching because again quoted from the article, “We Muslims consider the mixing of music and words from our Holy Qur’an deeply offending.” While its EXTREMELY unfortunate we have to wait for another 1 week or 2, I think Sony made the right decision in respecting the Muslim religion.

Gametrailers.com has more trailers for LittleBigPlanet for the PlayStation 3. Although they are all in Japanese, just by watching the game itself is more than enough to sustain my hunger for this game. By the way I’ve already pre-ordered my copy at Futureshop because you get an exclusive costume as I posted previously. I will be getting the Nariko costume from Heavenly Sword, speaking of which I will be playing that game again for the 4th time. Such a nice game but far too short.

Anyway back to the topic, these trailers are almost 17 minutes long in total! I particular like part 2 since it demonstrates how Snake and Sephiroth are born from scratch! And then it shows the producers holding real Snake and Sephiroth Sack Boy plush dolls. Man I want to get me one of those! I’m sure they will make them available, at least in Japan, since its another way of making money from us fans.

9 more days people!! Get ready to be creative!

    Enjoy the trailers!
