  • Dead Space 2

So I finally finishe Dead Space 2 and it was a blast! I would say the game is near perfect in my opinion. From start to finish it was full of none stop action and suspense where the game got me a few times and made me jump. Towards the end I didn’t expect I had to deal with so many necromorphs, they just kept on popping up here and there and that was fun! My only complain is the final boss fight and I will let you guys see for yourselves instead of me spoiling everything.

    Dead Space 2

Dead Space 2 introduced a few new guns but I seriously think the previous ones like the trusty plasma cutter, pulse rifle and the very powerful (even without upgrade) line gun, were more than enough to fight off any mobs of necromorphs. I did use the “sniper” seeker rifle from the beginning of obtaining it to the end. Definitely provided me with different ways of dismembering the necromorphs.

The game also introduced a few new types of necromorphs, the Crawler (exploding baby), Stalker and Pack along with the old “cast” like Slasher, the Brute and Lurker (see a full list here). Surprisingly there were a lot of boss encounters like the previous game, which is also one of the downfall of the game. But like I said, the game pace was so intense for me that didn’t bother me too much. Though I did miss killing the The Leviathan or The Hive Mind.

The sound effect, as usual, gave me the creeps and kept me alert and awake all the time. Funny how the necromorphs only appeared when I least expected! Good job on that.

I played a couple of multiplayer and honestly it wasn’t as bad as people said. But for sure it DOES require teamwork otherwise you will not achieve anything acting like Rambo. One thing is true though, is the fact that humans are a bit overpowered at times so you really have to play smart if you are playing as necromorphs. Sort of like Zerg from Starcraft, you really have to know when to swamp at the humans. Here’s a (obviously) tip, try not to go head on!

For all that PLUS it includes the rail shooter game Dead Space Extraction, originally from the Wii, I give Dead Space 2 a 9/10.

Perhaps there will be a third one?

  • Bayonetta was good, I personally thought it was much better than Devil May Cry. This week, the demo for SEGA’s upcoming third person shooter Vanquish, was out and I finally had a chance to try it out. First impression, wow, got to love the demo they picked for us. It is the one that Gametrailers has posted before. You get to fight the ginormous robot boss for this demo, which is basically the majority of the demo. I really love that battle suit (forgot the name of it) of the character you are controlling. The gun can morph into 3 different modes – shotgun, heavy machine gun and assault rifle that shoots quicker than the heavy gun. Only complain here is I wish the guns were louder, that’s it.

I love a lot of things about this game, huge boss, huge drop ships for you to shoot in the demo and you can make your character Tom to have a smoke in the middle of a gun fight. What more can you ask for? The third person system is pretty much the same as other ones so regular third person shooters will feel right at home. Remember Max Payne and its bullet time slow mo? Well its also in Vanquish (I’m sure there are other games that have bullet time), only this time you don’t need to fill up any meter to activate it, it will activate as soon as you are about to die, which opens up a few seconds for you to shoot your way out of harm.

The demo didn’t really let me do the power slide move (or maybe I’m just a noob and haven’t figured out how) which I don’t like, it looks kind of weird to be power sliding your way to cover. It reminds me of what soccer players do when they score goals, they do a power slide in front of the fans.

So after playing this short but sweet demo of Vanquish, I’m half sold. The only hold back right now is the fact there is no online component to it as mentioned in Destructoid. So I might actually wait a bit for this one until the price by half or something. I’m thinking of buying Bioshock 2 since the price has dropped to 29.99 and PLUS it has multiplayer, not that I want to play it though.

  • Love Plus +
We’ve heard about some kid marrying one of these anime girls a while back, then recently Konami announced Hotel Plus so that these kids can spend some quality time with their dead girlfriends, actually they were never alive to begin with, by the sea. It is sort of like traveling and going on vacation, except by yourself and your DS. Kudos to Konami for knowing how to profit off these poor souls with no real social interaction with real people, especially the girls.

I would love to see these guys get all awkward and stuff when they find out they are dating the same girls since there are only 3 girls in the game, though they have many hair styles to choose from. But they are still the same characters nevertheless. So have fun with that.

This is why Japan has such a low birth rate due to the fact that all the guys over there are obsessed, yeah OBSESSED with virtual girls. I know the game and the series in general offers tons of customization and possibilities but I still don’t think the game girls can ever replace the real thing, errr girls. Bottom line? Excuse my language but I just think they need to get laid. Period. End of story.

I’m so glad I have a real girlfriend and I won’t trade her for any game characters, no matter how cute/hot they are. In the end, they are still god damn pixels.

I mean, come on look at this trailer:

  • Bayonetta
Bayonetta, a pretty hyped up Devil May Cry style action game was released on Jan 5th. Unfortunately I didn’t get a chance to buy it on that day because I went to watch Avatar with my girlfriend, boy was that one of the best movies of 2009.

Anyway, I went to EB Games the next day but they were sold out, that was a bit surprising because I didn’t expect Bayonetta to be THAT demanding. I went to Best Buy and the PS3 version was sold out and no luck at EB Games again. I finally did get my copy at Futureshop the next day though, phew!

    Bayonetta
The game hasn’t let me down so far, I still haven’t got bored of the the ultra fast paced battles plus button mashing. I guess that was kind of expected from the beginning (button mashing). I’m not sure if its my lack of skills and patience or is the game hard at some of the sections. I am still having trouble with some of the quicktime events where you have to click the button at that particular moment, not earlier, not later, it has to be exact. I died a couple of times as a result. Some of the battles are pretty hard as well, maybe I need to get better with the dodge.

Boss battles are pretty epic, one of the reasons why I bought this game. I just love looking at oversized monsters that take up more than half the TV screen. I find them easier to deal with then those in Devil May Cry. Another reason, the Torture Attacks, never cease to entertain me with different violent and bloody damaging moves.

The graphics are very impressive though I have noticed a few areas with frame rate issues but they are not enough to put me off this game. Buildings give you the impression of their massiveness. The music is pretty good as well, instead of using rock and heavy metal from Devil May Cry, Bayonetta uses Jazz + piano which give this game a feeling of elegance and style.

    Bayonetta

Aside from the frame rate issue, one major problem with Bayonetta is the amount of loading and the length of each load. I think the developers could have done a better job at the loading aspect. Other than that, there is nothing really to pick on about this game.

For Devil May Cry fans, this should be a must buy. If you are into ultra fast paced action games, you should give this a try, at least rent it. This game isn’t for those who doesn’t enjoy some button mashing and/or controlling a stylish character. To me, Bayonetta was definitely a worthy game to buy.

  • Took me more than a day to finally convince myself to get this game. The main reason is because the game consists of only 12 levels and second reason is I’m a cheap gamer. In the end its the combination of sci-fi theme plus the fact that I’m a semi-hardcore fan of tower defense strategy games that made me make the purchase. I was a bit skeptical at first but after playing the first 4 levels, I must say this game offers a lot of content for the price I paid.

The goal of the game is simple, defend the mining operation from swamps of deadly alien insects called Insectocytes. The first 3 levels are basically tutorials, although you can switch off in the Options menu if you decide to replay those levels and I’m pretty sure you will. Just like any other tower defense strategy games, you will always start with the basic towers, just like PixelJunk Monsters, but instead of an arrow tower, your first tower will be a machine gun tower. By killing of waves and waves of enemies which gradually grow stronger than the previous waves, you will earn money to research new towers as well as upgrade your existing towers (up to level 5). You can als earn more money by advancing the enemy waves, if you feel that you can handle more without preparations.

Unlike PixelJunk Monsters where different types of enemies only take away one life from the total (one villager), different enemies take away different amount of health in Savage Moon. The stronger the enemy the more health or damage it will deal to your mining operation’s overall health.

As I mentioned before that this game offers more than what you are paying for, at least in my opinion. There are a couple of features that are not in PixelJunk Monsters – Command system, new types of towers that can be researched and you can rotate/zoom in and out of the map as well as camera mode from a particular tower.

Another difference between this game and PixelJunk Monsters is that you can only build a limited number of towers based on the available drop pods, even if you have the resources to build more. This makes the game more challenging as you need to plan carefully where you want to place the towers. A very nice feature. But don’t worry, the number will refill itself after each wave.

The command system has three aspects – more money per kill, stronger tower attacks and defense. At one time you can only have up to two of the three prioritized and sacrificing the third aspect. Or you can choose to have all three balanced. Early on you will pick more money per kill plus more fire power so that you can build up more, upgrade existing towers and research new ones.

There are also new types of towers to defend your mining operation such as the Repair Tower that will constantly repair nearby towers and Amp Tower that will make your nearby towers stronger as well as the very useful Block Tower that will allow you to block a path (not all paths can be blocked) by building multiple of these towers beside each other. Other towers can also be built on top of these Block Towers. There are more powerful ones as you progress through the game, I haven’t finished the game yet but I know there are more just by looking at different loading screens. I can’t wait til I get my hands on the Orbital Tower!

One negative comment I have for this game is the lack of multiplayer support (co-op) but I am sure a simple patch can change that?

Overall this game isn’t easy, except for the first 3 levels. The 4th level on Duergar on Xipe took me a few tries before figuring out what’s the best to deal with those pain-in-the-ass giant Insectocytes. This level is the first challenging level that will sure frustrates a lot of people playing for the first time. For those that are stuck on this level, just build a lot of Mortar Towers and you should be fine, at first I thought the Laser Towers would take them out quicker but I was wrong. And don’t forget to upgrade them as much as possible.

Most of the time you will use your money for researching, upgrading and building towers but occasionally you will want to use the Repair Base option to repair your damaged base.

PixelJunk Monsters has a relaxing and cartoonish feel to it, on the other hand Savage Moon has a totally different theme that takes place in space. Graphics are obviously more realistic, I am not criticizing PixelJunk Monsters’ graphics though because it was meant to be cartoonish and unrealistic. While its not Metal Gear Solid or Call of Duty quality, the graphics are more than enough to justify the price you pay.

I think the audio is what stands out the most besides the game play. When you kill waves after waves of enemies, you will constantly hear death screams which are very, very satisfying. I also love the sound each tower makes when it fires as well as when it upgrades and transforms into a stronger tower (great animation too!).

I highly recommend this little downloadable game on PlayStation Network for 9.99+tax. Fans of the sci-fi Tower Defense genre will not be disappointed with its refreshing style of game play. If I was to pick between PixelJunk Monsters and Savage Moon, I think I will pick Savage Moon over Monsters because there are just more things to do and the battles are much more intensive. Let’s hope there will be add-ons for this game in the future.

    8.5/10

[Update]: If you are looking for Savage Moon walkthrough, there isn’t any so far, not even in gamefaq.com. But I have found video walkthrough from PSU’s Savage Moon Walkthrough

  • macross ace frontier

Macross Ace Frontier is basically the Macross version of Gundam Seed: Rengou vs. Z.A.F.T. Portable. For those that don’t know Macross, its another Japanese anime with robots. The japanese version of the game has actually be released more than two months ago and no words for a North American release yet, as usual. The main ones are different though as they can transform into three different forms – plane, half plane half robot and full robot mode. Check out the latest series called Macross Frontier which just ended recently (25 episodes in total).

macross ace frontier macross ace frontier macross ace frontier

    Story and game play
There are two game modes for Single player – campaign mode and free mode. Everyone should know what you can do in free mode (just incase you don’t, you can pick random levels to play). Campaign mode contains four stories from the anime series ranging from the very first series Macross, Macross Plus, Macross 7 and finally the newest Macross Frontier.

I first started with the very first series Macross and first thing I don’t like right away is how crowded the menus are and its just so hard to navigate and too much to read (see image). It will take some time to get used to.

macross ace frontier macross ace frontier macross ace frontier

Missions are relatively short so its really good for people looking for on-the-go kind of games. There is one type of mission that I absolutely hate and Bandai Namco keeps implementing this type of mission in all these games – stupid crate pick up game where you have to pick up supply crates from one spot back to the ship which I find it really annoying and waste of time. Other than that, I don’t have much more to complain. It plays just as well as the Gundam counterpart. Also, you now have a partner that will assist you in missions as well and it does a pretty find job at helping instead of getting into your way. Your partner loves going out there all by itself sometimes. Unless you give your partner a specific task like defend, attack, grapple and operator (I assume the operator will tell you your current object if choosing this option)

I would also like to point out that there are many large scale battles, while they are very intense and fun to play. As trade off, the game suffers frame rate problems during these battles.

I haven’t had a chance to test but multiplayer mode supports up to 4 players.

macross ace frontier macross ace frontier macross ace frontier

Controls are identical as well (go figure) with one button for melee, range weapon, boost/jump and even the special attacks are the same (L + melee/change target/both). Enough with similarities, there are in fact differences between Macross and Gundam. First of all, as mentioned the main Macross robots can transform into three different modes (I know some Gundams are transformable too like Z Gundam, ZZ Gundam etc but they don’t have the half plan half robot form) with your analog button. I prefer the robot mode though because the other two modes you are constantly moving since you are a plane/half plane and I find it hard to control still as in the ones in the Gundam game. And as usual, you will unlock new robots, leveling up you and your partner after completing missions as well as abilities which is something new. Abilities like higher defense and further sight etc. Upon finishing up each series you will also unlock a few missions where you will get to play as the enemy from that series.

Another major difference is weaponry, Macross robots are famous for their missiles. The game does a nice job of showing that by having two modes of missiles. The first one is your normal lock-on missiles for a single target and the second one allows you to lock-on to multiple targets (by holding the circle button and the computer will auto lock-on to the targets for you, provided you are in range) which I find pretty interesting. I also find it fun to launch missiles non-stop at targets until you run out. By the way, all weapons can be recharged and the recharge time can be reduced through upgrade. The missiles are kind of overpowered in my opinion, but then again you are deal with a lot more enemies in this game then in the Gundam ones.

macross ace frontier macross ace frontier macross ace frontier

There is nothing new in the upgrade section except it looks more crowded with the menu design. Your upgrades will reflect on your partner’s robot as well so you don’t have to waste your upgrade points on the same type of robot, doesn’t make sense to anyway. You can upgrade a wide range of options like having more ammo in your gun, longer boost, reduced recharge time, more HP and of course stronger weapons etc.

Completely new to this game, or this type of game is the addition of customizing your own robots with different colors. The customization has three parts, main body, secondary body and the eyes. There are also many preset colors for you if you are too lazy to bother playing and testing with the colors yourself. This feature is a big PLUS as I always think being able to personalize your items, in this case, robots makes the game ten times more enjoyable because you can really call it your own.

macross ace frontier macross ace frontier macross ace frontier

Finally, you can also switch between first and third person view and I find it very helpful to be in first person when you are in the plane mode. It gives me the Ace Combat feeling actually. Pretty neat feature there! :)

    Graphics and audio
Again, graphics are similar to its Gundam counterpart. I know I’ve been saying this for the past few PSP reviews but I think its true as you can’t really go any further on a PSP than it possibly can. All I can say is that its good enough to be enjoyable. This goes to audio as well, nothing new here, just your usual robot moving sound, machine/laser gun and missiles firing. And as long as the game uses actual music from the anime series, I’m happy. I would be even happier if they actually implemented songs with people actually singing like Gundam vs Gundam instead of just plain music.

[correction] Its probably the first Macross series that doesn’t have songs, if you pick the Macross Frontier series, you will actually hear a song instead of just music on the very first level. So there are songs but not on every single level and I suspect only on a few levels.

    macross ace frontier

    Final verdict
Another great game that I am sure Gundam/Macross or any robot fans will enjoy. While it didn’t try to reinvent the wheel, it did add a few new features to the game. The greatest feature being the ability to customize your robots with different colors. And again, tons of unlockables like robots, missions and character abilities. If you really want this game even if you don’t know Japanese, you can find it on yesasia and ebay as well.

I haven’t played another snowboarding game since the SSX 3 from the PlayStation 2, that was one addictive game…while it lasted. What a perfect time to release another snowboarding game during or I should say near Winter time. Shaun White Snowboarding, available for PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Wii, Xbox 360, PC, Nintendo DS, PlayStation Portable. As a beginner snowboarder myself, its time for me to play another snowboarding game to get me warmed up…well at least mentally.

    Story and controls
Well there isn’t really a story, you choose a character out of the initial 3 and there are 6 unlockable characters. Then you will be basically snowboarding your way through 5 different slopes with increasing difficulties, you unlock the next one by completing the current one’s objectives and challenges. Each slope has its own quests and the first slope’s quests are basically tutorials that teach you about 4 basic skills – Speed, Carving, Rail riding and Jump/Grabs. Speed is obvious, basically you collect more points by going as fast as you can, without crashing of course. Carving is, in car term, drifting, but in snow and you get more points by performing near misses such as carving really close to a tree. Rail riding is riding on rails or broken tree branches and performing tricks while keeping yourself balanced by tilting left and right. Finally Jump/Grabs is jumping over ramps and perform tricks. This last skill is the trickiest and hardest to master because it has TONS of combinations. While in the air, you can rotate in all 4 directions, you can grab your board with your left hand, right hand or even both hands. You can combine them and perform something complicated such as rotate left while grabbing the board with your right hand and then rotate back wards while grabbing your board with both hands etc. Of course the trickier stun you can execute, the more points you get.

shaun white snowboarding screenshot shaun white snowboarding screenshot shaun white snowboarding screenshot

After each quest, you gain XP, as experience for each skill you have executed, so if you executed Speed skill, you get XP for skill etc. You can then use these XP to either upgrade your current skill level or buy new boards that will boost your skill levels plus other positive or negative boost for other skills. Why negative? If your Carve skill is level 4, some boards will bring your Carve skill back to 3 for example. So choose your board wisely when tackling on a particular slope or quest.

There is a main objective for each quest and 2 sub objectives which I highly suggest you complete as they unlock new boards with new boost bonuses and they aren’t really that much harder to do, at least for the first 2 slopes.

The game also supports multiplayer which I have not had a chance to try out unfortunately. But basically there are two modes – Co-op and competitive and I’m sure I don’t have to explain too much here.

    Gameplay, Graphics
Controls are very easy to get used to, at least in terms of executing basic moves and tricks. Like I said, it will take a bit to master or even get a hang of executing combo moves for LOTS Of POINTS, as the game’s tutorial explains. You can find your fingers pretty busy most of the time, even more so when you are attempting tricky tricks! Overall I think its pretty addictive since there are skills to level up and boards to purchase, collect them all anyone?

shaun white snowboarding screenshot shaun white snowboarding screenshot shaun white snowboarding screenshot

Graphics are your typical PSP quality, at least it looks or at least I think its better than Spider-man: Web of Shadows. The game uses “blur” effects to simulate the sense of speed but didn’t quite do as good of a job as Burnout. Burnout is the only game so far that can give me the great sense of speed that I crave for. Your character is very alive though on the other hand, very energetic.

I wish I could take more in-game pictures but its just too blurry to take them while actually snowboarding. I apologize but you can check out the images for the PSP version at IGN.

    Sound
Also your typical snowboarding music, some rock and some techno ones. Gotta love them and would be perfect in combination with the sense of speed if it was done better. Environmental sound is also nicely designed, with the board scratching sound to bird singing but the music is pretty loud so most of the time you will only hear the music and the occasional bumping sound or ice/snow scraping sound.

    shaun white snowboarding screenshot

    Final verdict
If you are into games and snowboarding, I think Shaun White Snowboarding will not disappoint. With different boards with different attributes to unlock and character leveling, you will have hours upon hours of snowboarding fun…..on a PSP. You might also consider getting this game on PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 for better graphics and other features, but if you are looking for on-the-go gaming fun like me, this game should be another worthy game to purchase for your PSP.

  • First I got the news from EBGames that the Mirror’s Edge demo will be available on November 6th, I guess its been pushed forward by 1 week and is released today. Its always a good thing! Unlike Little Big Planet, I am still waiting for it to be shipped from Futureshop, it said “Shipped” but I have yet to see it in my mailbox.

    Anyway onto the demo.

Oh-My-God, that was literally what I said to myself when I was playing this game, I have never had so much thrill for a long time! Even though the demo lasted 20-25 minutes max (unless you keep dying). The game is similar to The Bourne Conspiracy where you have to act quickly otherwise you will be captured/killed. Compare to Bourne, I think Mirror’s Edge is the better one.

mirror's edge screenshot mirror's edge screenshot mirror's edge screenshot

Faith, your character tells you the story in comic style during loading which is plus, its always better to be looking at something moving rather than the old boring “loading” text. The first part of the demo starts you off with a few tutorials of how to move around, jump, slide underneath objects, climb up. Aside from the basics, you will learn to disarm from behind or from the front, shoot or throw away the weapon. That’s not all! You will also learn to do crazy acrobatics like running horizontally on a wall then spin around and jump onto the opposite side (sorry I tried my best to describe). Its basically pressing 3 buttons but you need to really time your presses. So you can chain your moves and perform something crazy. One thing I absolutely love about the controls is that most of the actions are performed using just the L1.

mirror's edge screenshot mirror's edge screenshot mirror's edge screenshot

The second part is the real deal where you have to jump/move/climb around to deliver a package to the other runner Celeste. In between you have to run away from hostiles and/or fight your way through. Let me tell you, the second part was a THRILL to play!

mirror's edge screenshot mirror's edge screenshot mirror's edge screenshot

mirror's edge screenshot mirror's edge screenshot mirror's edge screenshot

Graphics are AMAZING and able to run in full HD 1080p. I particularly like the way the lighting is done. The whole city looks very realistic. I couldn’t stop taking pictures while playing the game and graphics are that good. Definitely eye candy.

Can’t really comment much on the music there’s only one track and a good one of course. Kind of feel like the Metal Gear Solid opening music.

If you haven’t downloaded the demo, please do so! You don’t know what you are missing!

mirror's edge screenshot mirror's edge screenshot mirror's edge screenshot

I really appreciate game companies releasing game demos because they allow us gamers to try out the games before purchasing them, instead of doing all the guessing and then taking the risk of buying something we don’t enjoy playing. Reading reviews and watching trailers from Gamespot and Gametrailers help a bit but you can never be sure until you have played the games YOURSELF.

The game will be released on November 11th.

Stay tuned for yet another hyped up game demo review – Tom Clancy’s End War.
