  • Fatal Frame 2 – Crimson Butterfly was and still is one of the best Japanese survival horror out there. You don’t fight against the typical zombies like in Resident Evil or to a lesser extend, House of the dead and Dead Rising. This game makes you capture evil spirits using an old camera called Camera Obscura. It was a pretty interesting and refreshing experience back then. Even now I still find this game amazing (check out my playthrough videos on my YouTube channel), well, minus the fact that there is really no difference between running and walking.

Fortunately, for Wii owners, there will be a remake coming soon later this year with improved graphics (check the trailer below). Unfortunately the remake is for Wii only. Why Tecmo why?! Seems that all the Japanese horror survival games are specifically for Nintendo only. Like the new 3DS game called Spirit Camera. You can pretty much guess who is the developer behind Spirit Camera. That’s right Tecmo!

Please make a remake for PS3 and Xbox360 please Tecmo!

  • When I saw it on Gametrailers, I couldn’t believe it, the video game version of The Grudge is coming out, well at least in Japan, for the Nintendo Wii. I can tell you I am a Japanese horror movie fanatic, I have all 3 games from the Fatal Frame series for the PlayStation 2, the forth installment is again for the Wii only, why?

Anyway, the trailer is pretty good in my opinion, the spookiness and the fact that you are exploring with just the flashlight makes the game even scarier. And in the end, the classic ghost-woman who makes creepy noise while crawling slowly towards you, just like from the movies! I’m pretty much used to all the horror movies, I don’t jump that easily but this one, although didn’t make me jump, I shaked a bit.

But why won’t it make it to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 is really beyond me. That’s my grudge.

  • F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin

The original F.E.A.R was such a great game because it combined first person shooter with horror, perfect for survival horror game fan like me. And I am not talking about cheap scare, the original game did in fact make me jump a few times and so did F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin. I can assure you all the Japanese horror movies I have watched have trained me to the point where I am pretty immune to scary moments.

    F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin

F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin, is the sequel of the original F.E.A.R, once again puts you as one of the members of the F.E.A.R team and the demo starts you off outside of a school right after a helicopter crash. The controls are a bit different than Call of Duty which took me a while to get used to. There were a few annoying moments when I mixed up the controls such as pressing down by accident and wasting medic kits (which you can only carry three at any time) or throwing grenades instead of firing the gun because the functions for R1 and R2 are different for COD and F.E.A.R. Then again its not the game’s fault, its just me, just wanted to rant.

You can carry up to four weapons and four different types of grenades at a time. The demo lets you experience with quite a few weapons. The weapons are the usual sub machine gun, assault rifle, rocket launcher, sniper, shotgun and laser gun. Which is not a bad thing really. Again you can carry up to three medic kits with you at a time. One thing I like and haven’t seen before is the option to kick down a table or open a car door for some extra cover. The AIs are actually pretty fast and smart (or maybe I just getting old and slow), but nothing too hard to take out. Another neat feature is the slow motion, while its not anything new, its been around since the Max Payne time. It never gets old blowing up enemies up close and personal while in slow mo!

    F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin

I’m sure most of you have seen trailers of the ass-kicking Elite Powered Armor Suits in action. And guess what? The last part of the demo lets you pilot this ass-kicking suit and you get to spray some machine gun bullets (the twin gun overheat if you spray non-stop!) plus firing four missiles together which will self reload. I don’t like the fact that you have to fire all four at the same time instead of one at a time. Other than that, the suit fight is the most enjoyable part of the entire demo.

    F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin

The game also managed to give me a few scared jumps, which is a good sign because that means the game is pretty scary. Like I said I don’t get scared easily.

In the graphics department, compare to Dead Space, which is another great horror shooter (third person), in my opinion, Dead Space has better textures. The lighting is pretty nicely rendered though.

    F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin

I actually want to point out the special effects are impressive. One that impressed me the most was when you are walking along the school’s hallway, all of a sudden all light bulbs pop and lockers flapping violently. The effects really help create a scary atmosphere. And Alma, well, she’s back and doing a good job scaring us when we least expect!

Overall I think the game is decent, I can’t say its good enough that is worth buying as soon as it comes out. For those haven’t tried the demo, go get it and see for yourself.

  • Its almost holiday season and I’m sure everyone’s looking for great games to play during that time. I have composed a list of top 10 games that I think its worth buying. Hope you guys will find the list helpful. They are not in any particular order.

    Dead Space

Dead Space – This has to be one of the best single player horror X sci-fi game I’ve ever played in years if not in my life. With innovative holographic menu system that is “real time” which means enemies can still attack you because the game is not paused, you don’t see any HP or ammo being displayed on the screen, instead you will see them on your character’s armor and the weapons. With this menu system, you can basically This makes the game more enjoyable because there is now nothing distracting you from the monster limb chopping you will surely enjoy. Audio is also nicely composed which really further makes the atmosphere even scarier.

    fallout 3

Fallout 3 – Similar to Oblivion released years back, this time taking place in post-apolcalyptic Washington D.C. in the year 2277. You will fight your way through raiders, mutants and ghouls. Killing anyone on your path including innocent people and become an evil or gain as much positive karma as you can to become a saviour or in between good and evil. Your karma will have direct affect between you and anyone you interact with. Aside from being able to switch between first and third person, Fallout 3 also introduces Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System or VATS which helps you “auto aim” at certain body parts or the same part (with the chance of hitting displayed) in bullet time style. Using VATS will drain your AP or Action Points which can be regained in time or by using items.

Finally, the world you are in is huge, and provide you many areas both up on the hills all the way to the underground into abandoned subway stations and caves to explore .

Guitar Hero World Tourrock band 2

Rock Band 2 / Guitar Hero World Tour – Two of the best musical / party / rock band game, play with up to three of your friends with mic, guitar and/or the drum. Some people prefer Rock Band while others say Guitar Hero World Tour is better. Well….guess it all depends on the person. I only have Guitar Hero and I’ve played Rock Band before at my friend’s house. I prefer the songs from Guitar Hero to be honest.

Left 4 Dead – I would say this is yet one of the best games of this year. You can play with up to 3 other players, bots or human and fight your way through zombie infested maps. The best feature of this game is that zombies can randomly pop out at you when you are least expected and the level of difficult is auto adjusted based on your performance. You can also have the option to play on the “dead” side as well. This game is very fast paced and really gives you the “rush/desperate” feel. Unfortunately this game is only for XBox 360 and PC owners.

Call of Duty World at War

Call of Duty: World at War – If you are into first person shooter, you should have played Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare by now. If not then something is obviously wrong with you in my opinion. COD: WAW takes place back in World War 2, I personally prefer modern time so I didn’t get this game. But COD: WAW offers 4 player co-op game play, a deadly flame thrower and you can unlock an extremely fun and increasingly difficult zombie stage after beating the game. This is a must for first person and/or World War fans, getting COD 4 is another safe buy as well. I’ve been playing COD 4 for over a year and I’m still not bored of it, this should tell you how good the COD series really is.

    WOW: Lich King

World of Warcraft: Lich King – One of the best MMORPG to date. I haven’t played WOW before and not planning to because I worry that I will get too addicted to it. I used to play and was hooked on Final Fantasy 11 for slightly less than 2 years in which it used up a lot of my time and so I had to call it a quit and said goodbye to my level 65 TaruTaru Dark knight…sigh. If you are a Warcraft fan, existing WOW player AND you have the time, I don’t see any reason why you should skip this expansion.

    Gears of War 2

Gears of War 2 – One of the best sci-fi third person shooter, unfortunately only available for the Xbox 360. Wish it would be ported over to the PlayStation 3 but I highly doubt it. I think this game is just as good as Call of Duty.

    Chrono Trigger

Chrono Trigger – One of the best RPG classic orginally released for the Super Nintendo. This turn based RPG created by SquareEnix has a rich story plot as well as amazing graphics (at the time of original release) and audio. RPG fans cannot miss this one!

    the last remnant

The Last Remnant – Many people will probably disagree on this one. Even after seeing the all the graphical issues like texture popping and laggy frame rate during battles. I still think this is a great game, again by Square Enix, and its a perfect Japanese RPG game to play until Final Fantasy 13 comes out. I particularly like the new battle system where you are not just fighting with your group but also have the ablity to give simple commands to your ally groups. As a result battles are much bigger and longer. Too bad its only for XBox 360, PlayStation 3 owners will have to wait and hopefully those graphical issues will be resolved by then.

I’m sure there are many other games that you think are worth buying, feel free to add to my list in the comments.

  • Capcom has released two lengthy (8+ minutes) trailers for Resident Evil 5. These two trailers are all about the co-op side of the game. While the commentators were a bit annoying because they were talking the entire time in JAPANESE which obviously I do not understand, the co-op game play as well as the graphics certainly look promising.

Resident Evil 5 is somewhat different from the previous series because I feel that the “horror” piece is missing now. Based on the trailers so far, it has become a survival third person shooter as oppose to survival horror third person shooter. There are also more ammo and healing items that can be picked up also probably because there are a lot more zombies, smarter ones that is, to kill. I hope there aren’t too many items for players to pick up otherwise the survival piece will be gone as well because you can just spray your ammo without worrying about how much you have.

Although I really wish the horror piece would remain (maybe its still there but not from the trailers), but the co-op feature is just too much for me to miss this game. If I decided not to get Call of Duty 5, RE5 will probably be my first co-op survival (horror?) third person shooter game.

And…I wish I was there at the Tokyo Game Show. -_-”

  • August didn’t have alot of games that interest me, except Siren: Blood Curse. But end of this month, we can expect two good games being released and at least three more next month (based on my preference of course, you might find these games boring). With all these great games coming out, for sure I will be broke in the next few months.

I will now briefly write about each one.

    Disgaea 3: Absence of Justice
I have never heard of the Disgaea series before, apparently its a Japanese anime style with 2d sprite characters turn base SRPG game. I’m a big fan of this type of RPG, aside from the sprites, the environments are in 3D, the special effects are amazing as well. And I’m always attracted to number games and this game definitely caught my attention with its million point damage! From the trailers, it has many different combo attacks, 100+ hours of play time (not sure if that is actually a good thing though, unless it is really that fun) and over 270 customizable characters!
Expect a review once I get my hands on this.

    Mercenaries 2: World in Flames
Ever since Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, I haven’t really paid attention to other first person/third person shooter game, well of course except Metal Gear Solid 4. Mercenaries 2 lets you play the main campaign with your friends. It offers a wide range of vehicles to take control and you can earn money to purchase gears as well. I’ve also checked out some trailers but I found the computer constantly calling for backup and saying the same thing over and over again which was annoying. But overall this game should be fun for those that enjoy blowing up stuff!

    And coming in September:

    Star Wars: The Force Unleashed
One of most anticipated games this year is finally here in September. A lot of trailers have shown what the impressive Havok Physics™ system can do when Darth Vader’s Secret Apprentice, your character, uses the “force” on enemies or on non-living objects like boxes or even a large ship. Graphics are impressive as well and makes the gameplay even more enjoyable in combination with the physics engine and other new technologies that are introduced for the first time. Demo will be available on August 21st. I can’t wait til get my hands on this one.

    LEGO Batman
Ahh need I say more? LEGO Batman. You can never get enough of LEGO, anything with LEGO is almost a instant win. LEGO Star Wars and LEGO Indiana Jones were/are pretty popular. There is a lot of replay value in all the LEGO games because you can unlock characters each with his/her own unique ability which will allow you to go to places you previously couldn’t. And don’t ever think the audio and graphics are childish either, they are amazing as I’ve seen from the LEGO Indiana Jones demo. I’m actually curious why the demo was released after the full version.

    Silent Hill Homecoming
I’m a big fan of survival horror games like Resident Evil, Fatal Frame and Siren. I feel that every new series gets nastier and each with a more twisted storyline. If you are a fan of past Silent Hill, you should not miss this one. And this game isn’t for everyone, if you can’t handle the “sickness” and the “twistedness” from the movie, (I think I just introduced a new word there) then this game isn’t suitable for you. For those that are a fan of the deadly but sexy nurses, they are back! :)

I would like to hear your must-buy list!

  • Once I have it installed and I started the game right away. First impression, at least on the music, CREEPY. I started the chapter right away, my character was a high school guy for some reason in this maze looking forest somewhere in Japan. From the first cut scene, he was trying to save a girl from being killed by the dead people, or possessed people and ended up running for his own life. Ok I think I should not spoil the whole story.

    Onto the game play.

    Siren: Blood Curse Chapter 1

The control is somewhat easy to get used to like any third person shooter. After another short cut scene from the first, I was controlling the high school kid and running for my life right off the bat. I picked up a “sake” (sake is Japanese alcoholic beverage made from rice) bottle, I was exited that I found a weapon and I jumped onto the dead person right away. Bad move, since he had a gun, I was dead after a few shots. The environment was really dark actually, I should have turned up the brightness a bit but I didn’t expect to be this dark. So after dying a few times trying to run away from the dead, I managed to find the escape path by fluke. :)

Dead nurses from Japanese horror games/movies are still sexy, even if they kill. :)

The chapter was rather short, I would say 15 minutes or even less if you could manage to find the path right away. Therefore I cannot comment much about this chapter. The next chapter is actually from the demo where you get to use the man with glasses and I expect it to be longer.

    Stay tuned!

  • And I thought August doesn’t have any games that will amuse me. I was half right, nothing on the shelf can but there’s one game on Playstation Store can, and that’s Siren: Blood Curse. I love Japanese horror style games so much I don’t think its right to miss this game.

Say tuned for reviews on all 12 episodes. Not all at once! But as I progress on each episode.

And by the way, if you are planning to buy the series, I strongly recommand buying all 12 at once for $39.99 to save some money (each 4 chapter set is $14.99).
