  • Two days ago, my friend messaged me and asked if I wanted to start having sleepless nights by playing SD Gundam Capsule Fighter Online. At first I thought it was a hacked message judging by the, in my opinion, weird URL – http://sdgo.ogplanet.com/, but I soon dismissed that and so I clicked the link. Once the page was loaded, I then realized this was the exact same online Gundam game that I wanted to play years ago but it was only available within Japan at the time.

He was right, we will be losing a ton of sleep because I’ve only been playing for a day or so and I am already addicted to this game. SD Gundam Capsule Fighter Online is basically an free-to-play MMO third person shooter game where you get to pilot SD, or super deformed, version of mobile suits. If you have played any other shooter games on PC, be it first or third person, you will be able to jump right in and start blasting enemie mobile suits AND mobile suit carriers.

One of the elements that makes SD Gundam Capsule Fighter Online so addictive is the fact that you can use your points that you obtain from quests and battles to buy capsule fighters from the capsule machines. For those who doesn’t know what I am talking about here is one example. There are more than a few dozen capsule machines for you to choose from, each machine contains 6 different mobile suits that you can potentially get from playing (using your points). The mobile suits are ranked A, B and C with C being the lowest class of all. Obviously you want to aim for Class As. But just like the real toy capsule machine, its all based on chance (minus the fact that real toy capsule machine owners might take out the good ones and sell them separately for higher prices leaving all the worthless ones in the machine). It took me more than 10 tries to obtain the class B Blue Flame.

The game starts you off with tutorials covering the basics, then you will receive a random capsule which is your very first capsule fighter. It will probably be either a class C Zaku or GM. I got the GM and my friend got a yellow GM. Yes they are pretty bad but they are really just your starter MS (mobile suits). You can quickly obtain your next capsule fighter by completing quests. You will also earn the points mentioned above so you can try out your luck on one of those capsule machines. You and your MS will gain experience as you play. As your MS’s gain more experience and “rank” up, they will obtain abilities like the “special” move as well as passive / active abilties like increased attack or speeds up consecutive rate of firing when HP is below 40%.

There are different servers as well that suit different players (trainees, beginners and more advanced players) to do your co-op missions (up to 4 players) for completing quests or just in general. There are also single player missions, tutorial missions as well as PVP servers where human players clash with each other in free for all or team PVP. I don’t suggest you go into the PVP servers as most of the players, at least I’ve seen so far, all have high end capsule fighters (mostly class A) and chances are you will get killed in one shot easily.

In terms of graphics, its not Battlefield 3 quality obviously. But it doesn’t have to be since its a cartoon to begin with. The graphics is smooth and fluid enough and I did not suffer any framerate drops on my desktop but I did try it on my labtop and I did notice a lot of lag but probably because my labtop does not have a video card, but mind you its still playable on the labtop.

There are still a lot of features that I have not yet fully explored, such as the blue print system where I suspect you can build MS instead of trying out your luck, customizing the MS with stickers and paint of your choice and so on. There seems to be many different customizations for each MS.

Unfortunately I cannot record this game while I play but there are a bunch of gameplays on youtube and here is one:

If you are a Gundam fan, this is a must try! What’s there to lose? Its free!

  • Fat Princess
So I finally gave in, purchased and downloaded Fat Princess off PSN because I’ve been eyeing on this game since it was released. I was excited now that I finally got the game but was it worth it? I have mixed reactions about this game. Definitely not as good as I expected though!

So immediately after downloading and installing Fat Princess, which is basically an action strategy game where there are two sides (red and blue). You can customize your character with different looks and more are unlocked as you progress in the game. The objectives are capturing the princess (capture the flag), death match. There is also a soccer x death match for online as well, this mode is pretty straight forward based on the name. You have 5 classes to choose from – warrior, ranger, healer, dark magician who can drain enemy health and the worker. The workers are necessary, in order to gather wood and minerals to upgrade the different classes’ buildings in order to unlock their upgraded classes. They also responsible for building castle doors and catapults which can launch a group of people to the enemy castle.

I wanted to get a hang of the game first being playing online so I jumped into the single player game and played its rather short storyline which consists of 7 chapters. It was enjoyable most of the time, specially the death matches. There was one chapter that I thought was frustrating, at least playing with the AIs, the ones which you have to rescue your princess.

    Fat Princess

I guess for now AIs are still dumb and cannot act/play like humans. Most of the time I was alone inside enemy castle trying to rescue the princess even though you are allowed to have up to 3 AIs to help you on your side. And most of the time I got killed right on the spot because either the enemy AIs just swamped me or they cake-fed the princess so much I was basically not moving at all, and then swamped by the enemies!

In terms of graphics, its not Killzone 2 graphics obviously, it is pleasing to the eyes, cartoonish with vibrant colors. I think the blood and gory part is one of the major plus for this game. Whenever there is a battle you know there will be blood and body parts every where which is insanely fun to watch as you chop your way to your enemies!

Without going into every single detail of the game, I’m sure this game is worth the $16 (+tax) I paid. I think its a pretty good casual game where you want to jump in when you have 30 minutes to spare. Its not perfectly for sure and hopefully we will see some expansions/add-ons in the near future, free download would be nice!

    Check out Gametrailers.com’s review:

  • It felt like ages when I played Quake 3 or Quake III Arena, it WAS ages ago, 10 to be exact. I was instantly hooked by this whole online mutiplayer shooter because it was a big thing back then, at least to me.

This classic first person shooter is back and you can actually play it on your broswer and its free. Nothing is better than free, and guess what? Its actually pretty addictive and brings a lot of my childhood memories back. The reason why I call this a minor review is because I hard got to play it, the server is always down but its obvious why.

You will first need to register, no brainer there. You will be put into a queue in order to do so, same as when you log in to play (yes you have to wait in line to log in and play). Then pick one of 20+ characters that were in the previous Quake series as well as the Doom series. The controls are basically the same by the way. First thing you need to do is go through the so called tutorial, mainly aim for those that have not played first person shooter and/or Quake on a PC before. You have the option to skip the tutorial by pressing F3 and go right into a practice match with a computer opponent Crash for 10 minutes. You should have absolutely no problem getting more frags (kills) than her. If you can’t, well you are a true noob.

Unfortunately that’s when my fun stopped, right after I finished the painfully long 1 on 1 with the computer, the server crashed while I was searching for available games. Hopefully they can fix the server issues because so far I have seen “Quakelive will return shortly” far too many times.

I can’t wait to play with the human opponents!

  • So here I am searching for more free games online again. This time I stumble upon iWin. Instead of playing the games on your browser, you actually download games to your computer. Before you can actually download any games, you will need to download a small program called iWin Games Manager which is a very nice program to organize the download queue for the games. You can also use the manager to browse through the games just like you do on your browser.

iWin has over 100 free game downloads to choose from. These games have ads that last for 15 seconds before you can play, you can purchase the ad free version for as low as $6.99. There are also many games in the Steals & Deals section for much cheaper games. Consider the quality of these games are pretty decent, the 15 seconds is worth the wait.

There are different types of games to play, ranging from puzzle games , action games, board/card games and a kids section where the games are for kids of all ages.

I like how they have an info page for each game with actual screen shots of the game. This gives a better idea of how the game is like before actually downloading it. You can also sign up for iCoin, its basically a membership. There are three memberships for you to choose from which you can save up to 65% and you will also get bonus games with any type of membership as well.

So if you and/or your children are looking for casual games that are cheap and fun, pay iWin a visit!

  • Skate 2

So last night I got some time to try out GTI Club + while downloading the demo for Skate 2.

So today, I talked about this game at work with my co-worker and he said the first game was pretty good so I was even more excited to give this a try after work. The demo offers single player game as well as a party demo which allows you go party together with up to 3 other players (offline not online) which I didn’t get a chance to try since I only have one controller (still!) and I couldn’t call any of my friends right at that moment. But after playing the single player and was impressed, I thought to myself this MIGHT just be the first skateboard game I will purchase!

    Skate 2 Skate 2

I also want to point out that the demo is time based, you can extend the time by performing tricks to earn more points. Before you actually go out there and start boarding you get to customize your character. You can customize from a wide range of features like gender, hair type/color, eye color, facial hair etc. The customization can easily drain 30 minutes of your game time if you go crazy with your character. You also start off with $300 which is used to purchase different clothes or skateboards, which I didn’t. Finally you get to choose your stance, goofy means your right foot in front and regular means left foot in front. I’m a regular, just like in snowboarding.

Once you are done with your character, you will start off in the neighborhood. Similar to the popular GTA 4, Skate 2 has a “sand box” style world and you can skateboard/move freely within the neighborhood. Then again you can’t really do that in this demo since you only have a few minutes, unless you start performing tricks and earn points in order to extend the timer.

    Skate 2

Honestly as a first time Skate player, I had some trouble trying to memorize all the controls because there are quite a few to remember. But in time you will get used to the controls. Since the demo is time based, you don’t really have too much time to test out the controls and each “trick”. During the game, you have to jump across a gap which you have to first pick up speed, then pull the right analog stick back and then forward to make your character jump. The whole process was harder than I thought. If you fail, the tips screen will play and explain to you how to do execute jump properly. The tips screen is great, for the first time because the explanation is very clear combined with demonstration. But every time you miss the jump, you are forced to see the same screen over and over again until you make it across. Very annoying!

If you don’t feel like boarding, you can pick up the board and walk instead.

Graphics wise, I’m very impressed with the environment and the structures but quite disappointed with the character designs. Particularly character facial textures and lip-synching is poorly done in my opinion. But I guess the focus of this game isn’t the characters but executing tricks. By the way, the game supports 1080p full HD.

So my final words for this game, GET IT. If you are unsure, get the demo and find out. This game is coming out at the end of this month. Skateboarders, this game is a must, I’m pretty sure I don’t have to tell you guys about that!

  • If you enjoy online poker, then you should check out and play poker at Pacific Poker, one of the oldest and the best online poker room on the net. Getting started is as simple as downloading the needed software for free. Once you are done, you will then have to register for an account and you can now start playing! There are many games to choose from – ring games, texas hold em, omaha hi, seven card stud and many more.

Once you are in the lobby, you will be able to choose the options of playing for real money or for practice, what kind of games you want to play and finally the kind of table or tournament you wish to play at (ring game, sit & go, multi-table, jackpot). The lobby is easy to navigate through and sorting the list according to your preferences is as easy as clicking on any column header (stakes, limit, players, speed, average pot, hands per hour, etc). You can also customize which information columns you want to appear in the list of tables as well.

If you think you got what it takes, you can also participate in poker tournaments which you can find in the tournament lobby. Again you have the option to play with real money or for practice.

I also discovered they have a very neat guide section that talks about the main lobby, poker tables and the tournamentlobby. Each guide is presented in a Flash format, you can mouse over a particular area and the corresponding explanation will popup.

So if you have read all the way down to this paragraph, you should be at least a bit interested and/or curious about PacificPoker.com or online poker in general. So what are you waiting for? Head over there now!

  • PlayStation Home PlayStation Home PlayStation Home

Sony mentioned its long waited PlayStation Home would be released before the end of this year, after so many delays and disappointments, Home beta actually got released today! I can’t imagine what the result would be if it wasn’t able to deliver its promise, again.

I was quite excited about hearing it from wired blog because I’m into virtual reality related games such as Second Life. I downloaded a 70+ mb file from the PlayStation Network and I was in the game within minutes. You start out in your own virtual apartment and let me tell you the graphics are stunningly nice. The view is even more impressive if you want out the balcony and look out the the boat yard. Literally breath taking!

PlayStation Home PlayStation Home PlayStation Home

There are tutorials here what will teach you about the features of Home such as basic action, words and the ability to move your decorations as you see fit. Obviously you can buy more decorations with real money just like you would when purchasing downloadable contents from PlayStation Store.

Every place requires you to download its piece, for example the Mall, which is around 30mb in size. Hopefully my 40GB PlayStation can last for a while because I don’t want to install a bigger one (too lazy) and right now I only have 12GB left. Anyway back to the Mall, as you can guess, this is where you will be able to purchase new clothes ($0.49 and up), home decorations ($0.99 and up) and even new living spaces ($4.99 and up). Obviously since its beta so there are only a handful of items available for purchase and some stores are still closed. I’m pretty sure there will be a LOT more since if Home goes well, it will be another source of income for Sony. I can already see myself buying all sorts of clothes and decorations to personalize my own character, or avatar and my apartment.

PlayStation Home PlayStation Home PlayStation Home

Aside from the Mall, there is also a Theatre, a Bowling Alley, a music place where you can vote for which song to play next and in the middle has a mini game in a pond in the central gathering area. You basically fly a UFO around and catch things. I assume there will be more mini games introduced in the future, hopefully free of charge. I assume the Bowling Alley is also another mini game place, I haven’t had a chance to download that piece and experience it yet because I was too busy appreciating the graphics of Home.

PlayStation Home PlayStation Home PlayStation Home

Unfortunately none of my friends have it yet but there are already many PS3 owners to interact with. Just like many online games, there will always be some idiots annoying others. I guess that’s part of MMO life. You have the option to block and/or mute players. And of course you can also add players to your friends list. Chatting can be slow without the keypad but its nothing major plus there are some preset words and emotions for you to choose from. I am still trying to figure out how to get the emotion of playing the PSP. I asked around and no body answered. Sigh, talking about friendly huh?

I highly recommend the PlayStation Home to everyone, with a PS3 obviously, because its an alternative way to meet up with your friends as well as meeting new friends and play mini games or launch, say, Call of Duty 4 together. The graphics are amazing, and I hardly experienced any lag at all even with many people around me. I haven’t noticed any frame rate issues so far either even with the impressive graphics and the amount of people. And best of all, its free to play unless you start decorating your character and/or your apartment.

That is all I have discovered about PlayStation Home so far, I am sure there are more but that’s for me and YOU to find out!
