  • Battlefield Play4Free looks pretty promising even though it doesn’t have the best graphics but doesn’t mean it will be a bad game. So far based on the trailer, I am more than convinced the game will be worth playing on PC until I get a new PS3 next year. Yes, mine overheated (yellow light of death) again for the second time and died a total of 3 times with the first one being the Blu-ray control board dead.

I’ve already paid $180 to Sony to fix the control board issue, then another $90 to resoldered the board for the first overheat. I am not going to pay another $90 just to have it resoldered and get it fried again. I might as well accept the fact that I bought a lemon. There is no chance in hell I am going to fork out money to fix this, I’ve already forked out enough to buy a new one almost.

    So what’s the point?

One reason I believe its a lemon is the fact that, the second overheat happened after 2 games of Call of Duty, don’t tell me the console will overheat after 2 games which lasted for less than 20 minutes. My friend joked its probably because the game got to intense. I laughed out loud.

  • aliens vs predator

I’ve always wanted to play the original Aliens vs Predator but never, ever got a chance to. I think this time I won’t miss it, I can’t. Not after watching all these promising trailers. I have a strong feeling that this game is going to be worth it. I was right about not getting Dark Void, didn’t even bother trying the demo and I was right. The review from GameTrailers said it all.

Well, why do I think this game is worth buying the very first day? The fact that it has a mix of sci-fi, survival horror and first person shooter is more than enough to convince me. Much like Dead Space, another great sci-fi x survival horror x FPS game. Only this time, instead of playing as human only, you get to play Alien or the Predator as well! I’ve always thought Predator was cool and I still think it (he?) is with its feel-so-over-powering cloaking ability. Sort of the uglier version of Snake from Metal Gear Solid. Well maybe just the stealth part.

    aliens vs predator

Alien on the other hand, is for those who are into quick and heavy melee attacks. I’m guessing the only range attacks are its tail jab and spitting poision from its inner mouth like the Hydralisk from Starcraft?

And finally the human will be for the newbies or you are really a fan of yourself – human. I’m sure each side has its own strengths and weaknesses.

I’m also excited about the single or co-op survival mode (the mode where you find endless waves of enemies), which I expected Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 to have. Now finally I get to play this mode without having to buy Call of Duty: World at War. WHen this comes out, I wonder I will still be playing MW2 as much as I have been or will it finally be dethroned.

Aliens vs Predators will be out 2 days after Valentine’s Day, Feb 16th 2010. Which side will you be on?

And boy check out these crazy death moves!

  • I still haven’t bought Fat Princess because I’ve been way too busy to buy new games. Well the real reason is probably because its not a first-day-buy for me. I know its fun, hella fun, but it just isn’t enough to convince me to get it right away. Anyway enough of that. Fairytale Fights might just be good enough to convince me to get this.

Fairytale Fights, you can partially guess, its about fairytale. There ARE fairytale characters in there, but with a twist. Fairytale Fights, not only does it involve violent action, but we are talking about ULTRA violent and bloody action where your fairytale character are literally chop the enemies into pieces. End result? Blood everywhere on the ground, what makes this even funnier is you can “skate” on the blood! Now that is funny!

This also feels like a party game, like the Wii kind. Which is a bonus because PS3 and Xbox are both missing some good party games. I’m also putting my bets on this being a downloadable instead of a full $60 game.

Fairytale Fights will be released on October 27, 2009.

  • I only have one childhood super hero and that’s Batman. Just got to love the dark theme, his cape, vehicles and gadgets. Oh almost forgot, the bat cave and his infinite wealth. Gizmodo just made my day by posting this youtube video of a “$1 million 700hp Batmobile, built over a 1973 Lincoln Continental chassis“.

While I agree on the fact that most people would not spend a million on this beast, a sexy one. I WOULD buy it after investing that one million dollars though after a few years. Unfortunately the video only shows a glimpse of what’s inside but I am quite convinced it is stuffed with tons of gadgets, stuff that you probably don’t need in a car.

Being a car freak, I would be more interested in the performance of this Batmobile replica though. Does it come with those hooks that get shot out to aid in cornering at very high speed? If it does well, pedestrians beware!

  • About more than a month ago, I wrote a post about how I “broke” my PlayStation 3. My friend came over today to take it apart and we are now pretty sure what the problem is as well as the potential cause.

I found this youtube video for us to follow which I think is pretty detailed. This video basically shows you how to disassemble the PS3 as well as putting it back together. But I warn you, if you do not have the confidents and/or skills to do it yourself, I suggest you don’t and instead find someone you know to do it! I also suggest you DO NOT take it apart UNLESS it is over the 1 year warranty because disassembling the PS3 will void your warranty if you are still within that 1 year.

Opening the PS3 is actually easier than I thought, provided you have the right screwdrivers though! You will need a small “minus” sign screwdriver for the very first screw (the one behind the warranty sticker) as well as the torx 10 screwdriver for the ones inside. So we thoroughly checked and make sure it wasn’t the control arms that were causing the problem. I wish it was though, so at least we could relocate them back to their correct positions. Unfortunately that wasn’t the case.

At this point, we were pretty sure at least the mechanical parts were working properly, we were now stuck whether the cause was coming the Blu-ray lense or as my friend suggested, the drive controller. The drive controller is the board that lies below the Blu-ray drive (as shown in the third picture, right below the yellow warning sticker).

    Broken PlayStation 3Broken PlayStation 3Broken PlayStation 3

We then looked on ebay because I read from some forums that people are selling the complete Blu-ray rom drive on ebay for $150+USD + shipping. But they don’t include the drive controller. We thought we could swap the existing one in if indeed its the rom drive that’s causing the problem. Next we searched for PS3 drive controller and to our surprise we found someone from Hong Kong selling just the PS3 drive controller for $80+ USD. We thought maybe we should give the controller a try? Then we saw someone asking if it came with the mother board as well but the seller answered was “NO”. Then the person who asked the question said each drive controller is keyed to with a specific mother board which means you can’t just swap the drive controller. So inclusion, if you fry your Blu-ray drive’s controller, your only options are either buy a new PlayStation 3 (duh!) or send it back to Sony (will update how much once I call them on Monday). As you can see I really have no choice but to send it back after finding out how much they are going to charge me. I found a forum (I can’t find it anymore for some reason!) and the person had the same issue as me and he had the chance to talk to the technician and he said it wasn’t the drive itself but rather it was the shorted drive controller. This convinced us that should be what my PS3 is experiencing right now.

If its only your Blu-ray drive that’s not working properly I think you can still get a new one on ebay and swap out the drive controller from your old drive to the new one and it SHOULD work. I cannot be sure as I have not tested.

I hope this little blog post will help those that are in the same similar situation as me. Just try and NOT turn off your PS3 by using the power switch at the back until it shows you the red light! I hope it doesn’t happen to any one of you!

  • There were a few demos released yesterday on the PlayStation Network. One was a very disappointing third person beat-them-up Watchmen: The End is Nigh. All you do is perform light/heavy/throw attack on your enemies, it was actually interesting for the first 5 minutes but then it got so repetitive I lost interest of the game. The demo allows you to play for 30 minutes (there is a big timer on top), frankly I think it doesn’t take 30 minutes to figure out the game needs to end, right now! If you are not convinced, IGN rated this game a 5.5.

Luckily, the other demo, which is one of the highly anticipated games, also based on the movie – Wanted: Weapons of Fate. Its a third person shooter with a twist, just like in the movie, you can carve your bullets to travel at ridiculous angles before hitting your target. Initially, you can perform two carves before needing to refill them by killing your enemies. If its a kill shot, the camera will follow the bullet up close and in slow motion before hitting the target’s head. Based on screenshots I saw over the Internet, you can have more than two carves as you progress through the game.

The demo is pretty short as well, but at least its sweet and short not sour and short like Watchmen: The End is Nigh. In my opinion, Wanted: Weapons of Fate has one of the best cover systems out there. You can move quickly behind one object to another by a press of a button. You can also perform one hit melee kill when you walk up to your enemy, again in slow motion and your screen ends up with a splash of blood after the execution.

I love the graphics, specially the black suit your character is wearing. The interior of the plane, which is where the demo takes place, is also pretty detailed.

One complain I have for this game is the background music. It switches between two tracks, one is the normal situation and the other for during gun fights. It gets annoying when you go in and out of battles, meaning the two tracks are starting, stopping and restarting within a small time frame.

Wanted: Weapons of Fate will be released on March 24th, I’m not sure if I want to get it though. Its certainly fun but I’m just not sure how long before I get bored of bullet carving.

I am still wondering who the female unlockable character you can get though.

  • Took me more than a day to finally convince myself to get this game. The main reason is because the game consists of only 12 levels and second reason is I’m a cheap gamer. In the end its the combination of sci-fi theme plus the fact that I’m a semi-hardcore fan of tower defense strategy games that made me make the purchase. I was a bit skeptical at first but after playing the first 4 levels, I must say this game offers a lot of content for the price I paid.

The goal of the game is simple, defend the mining operation from swamps of deadly alien insects called Insectocytes. The first 3 levels are basically tutorials, although you can switch off in the Options menu if you decide to replay those levels and I’m pretty sure you will. Just like any other tower defense strategy games, you will always start with the basic towers, just like PixelJunk Monsters, but instead of an arrow tower, your first tower will be a machine gun tower. By killing of waves and waves of enemies which gradually grow stronger than the previous waves, you will earn money to research new towers as well as upgrade your existing towers (up to level 5). You can als earn more money by advancing the enemy waves, if you feel that you can handle more without preparations.

Unlike PixelJunk Monsters where different types of enemies only take away one life from the total (one villager), different enemies take away different amount of health in Savage Moon. The stronger the enemy the more health or damage it will deal to your mining operation’s overall health.

As I mentioned before that this game offers more than what you are paying for, at least in my opinion. There are a couple of features that are not in PixelJunk Monsters – Command system, new types of towers that can be researched and you can rotate/zoom in and out of the map as well as camera mode from a particular tower.

Another difference between this game and PixelJunk Monsters is that you can only build a limited number of towers based on the available drop pods, even if you have the resources to build more. This makes the game more challenging as you need to plan carefully where you want to place the towers. A very nice feature. But don’t worry, the number will refill itself after each wave.

The command system has three aspects – more money per kill, stronger tower attacks and defense. At one time you can only have up to two of the three prioritized and sacrificing the third aspect. Or you can choose to have all three balanced. Early on you will pick more money per kill plus more fire power so that you can build up more, upgrade existing towers and research new ones.

There are also new types of towers to defend your mining operation such as the Repair Tower that will constantly repair nearby towers and Amp Tower that will make your nearby towers stronger as well as the very useful Block Tower that will allow you to block a path (not all paths can be blocked) by building multiple of these towers beside each other. Other towers can also be built on top of these Block Towers. There are more powerful ones as you progress through the game, I haven’t finished the game yet but I know there are more just by looking at different loading screens. I can’t wait til I get my hands on the Orbital Tower!

One negative comment I have for this game is the lack of multiplayer support (co-op) but I am sure a simple patch can change that?

Overall this game isn’t easy, except for the first 3 levels. The 4th level on Duergar on Xipe took me a few tries before figuring out what’s the best to deal with those pain-in-the-ass giant Insectocytes. This level is the first challenging level that will sure frustrates a lot of people playing for the first time. For those that are stuck on this level, just build a lot of Mortar Towers and you should be fine, at first I thought the Laser Towers would take them out quicker but I was wrong. And don’t forget to upgrade them as much as possible.

Most of the time you will use your money for researching, upgrading and building towers but occasionally you will want to use the Repair Base option to repair your damaged base.

PixelJunk Monsters has a relaxing and cartoonish feel to it, on the other hand Savage Moon has a totally different theme that takes place in space. Graphics are obviously more realistic, I am not criticizing PixelJunk Monsters’ graphics though because it was meant to be cartoonish and unrealistic. While its not Metal Gear Solid or Call of Duty quality, the graphics are more than enough to justify the price you pay.

I think the audio is what stands out the most besides the game play. When you kill waves after waves of enemies, you will constantly hear death screams which are very, very satisfying. I also love the sound each tower makes when it fires as well as when it upgrades and transforms into a stronger tower (great animation too!).

I highly recommend this little downloadable game on PlayStation Network for 9.99+tax. Fans of the sci-fi Tower Defense genre will not be disappointed with its refreshing style of game play. If I was to pick between PixelJunk Monsters and Savage Moon, I think I will pick Savage Moon over Monsters because there are just more things to do and the battles are much more intensive. Let’s hope there will be add-ons for this game in the future.

    8.5/10

  • GTI Club +

I have not played the original version of GTI Club which was released back in the 90s by Konami for the arcade. I gave this PS3 demo a try and I must say the game was better than I expected. Though I still am not convinced if the full version is worth it or not. Call me cheap but I like to buy games that I think is worth buying, even if its only $9.99!

So just like the original arcade game, this HD version still have that heavy arcade feel to it, from the graphics as well as from the commentator who I find somewhat annoying. The demo is pretty short, you only get to drive one car, a Volkswagen Golfs, with the default color and race around one single map. The race is pretty short, but sweet. I actually played three times non stop. One thing I absolutely hate is the demo doesn’t allow you to restart a race, which is stupid. You have to go all the way back from the first screen, pick everything again and start the race.

GTI Club + GTI Club +

Forget about realistic car physics, there isn’t any. You hit something? Don’t worry just keep driving. I don’t think you should care much, unlike GT5 because this is an arcade game, its no simulation. Without the real physics, its a different way of driving and boy its fun because you can go out there and drive as reckless as you want. I think that’s the beauty of this game.

During the demo play, I was able to find a short cut as well so I can only assume there will be more hidden places and short cuts for all the courses. AIs DO actually drive into these short cuts.

Even though the graphics are no Metal Gear Solid quality, it doesn’t have to be nor does it need to. I think the graphics are sharp and vibrant. Everything from buildings to reflection from the cars are nicely designed, again for an arcade game.

Again, although I won’t be getting this game, because I just don’t see myself playing this game for more than a day or so, specially with such a short demo. Another reason might be the fact that all my attention AND patience are allocated to Killzone 2 which is coming out end of Feb. But I still think this one is perfect for GTI Club fans as well as those that are looking for casual video gaming, or should I say casual video driving. Not sure how many courses there will be in the full version, there will be more cars (obviously) like Mini Coopers and Volkswagen Golfs etc. The full game also supports up to 8 players online. And there is this game mode called Bombtag which actually sounds crazy fun.

If you haven’t tried it out, get it on PlayStation Network and go for a spin!
