  • aliens vs predator

I’ve always wanted to play the original Aliens vs Predator but never, ever got a chance to. I think this time I won’t miss it, I can’t. Not after watching all these promising trailers. I have a strong feeling that this game is going to be worth it. I was right about not getting Dark Void, didn’t even bother trying the demo and I was right. The review from GameTrailers said it all.

Well, why do I think this game is worth buying the very first day? The fact that it has a mix of sci-fi, survival horror and first person shooter is more than enough to convince me. Much like Dead Space, another great sci-fi x survival horror x FPS game. Only this time, instead of playing as human only, you get to play Alien or the Predator as well! I’ve always thought Predator was cool and I still think it (he?) is with its feel-so-over-powering cloaking ability. Sort of the uglier version of Snake from Metal Gear Solid. Well maybe just the stealth part.

    aliens vs predator

Alien on the other hand, is for those who are into quick and heavy melee attacks. I’m guessing the only range attacks are its tail jab and spitting poision from its inner mouth like the Hydralisk from Starcraft?

And finally the human will be for the newbies or you are really a fan of yourself – human. I’m sure each side has its own strengths and weaknesses.

I’m also excited about the single or co-op survival mode (the mode where you find endless waves of enemies), which I expected Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 to have. Now finally I get to play this mode without having to buy Call of Duty: World at War. WHen this comes out, I wonder I will still be playing MW2 as much as I have been or will it finally be dethroned.

Aliens vs Predators will be out 2 days after Valentine’s Day, Feb 16th 2010. Which side will you be on?

And boy check out these crazy death moves!

One of the most anticipated games of 2009, Modern Warfare 2, will be out on November 10th. Man I have been waiting for the sequel to one of the best first person shooter games to date for both offline and online multiplayer (logged over 30 days worth of hours so far). I have extremely high expectation for Modern Warfare 2 with another great storyline as well as new weapons and strategies.

Based on the trailer just released recently, you can know customize your killstreak loadouts, one of them being able to pilot the AC-130 Gunship! I can’t imagine what other new additions we are getting, perkwise. And finally, I can only assume there will be co-op game plays as well as the ultra-fun zombie survival shoot out. I missed it for World at War because I am not into World War era anymore and I certainly don’t want to miss it again. Its gonna be different killing those undead using modern weapons. Imagine using the Gunship on them!

For now we can only dream……

  • Call of Duty 4

So I’ve been playing Killzone 2 since it came out and I want to write about my thoughts on this game, compare to Call of Duty 4. The reason why I’m comparing KZ2 with COD4 is because of how much time I spent on both of these first person shooter online, obviously with COD 4 having more time logged.

Although Killzone 2 is a great game, intense game play and graphics, I am starting to see myself getting bored of it as oppose to keep on playing and playing for as long as I can see in the case of COD4. The levelling system is great for Killzone 2, until you have maxed out your level and unlocked all the badges (engineer, medic, scout, saboteur, assault and tactician). Then there are badge specific ribbons such as getting 5 kills using turrets you deployed, repairing objects or reviving your teammates and you will gain other power-ups or unlock abilities for each completion.

So far, I have only completed the engineer badge and have the other 5 plus the default rifleman’s ribbons to complete. Don’t get me wrong, I will continue to play Killzone 2. But it just isn’t able to capture my interest level as much as when I first started playing it. On the other hand, Call of Duty 4 has managed to keep my interest level constant if not higher, and I have to admit I am starting to miss COD4. One reason I know is that you can keep grinding your level for a long time, I have yet to reach the max prestige level. And also the fact that I prefer modern weaponry over any other weapons.

    Killzone 2

This is just my thoughts after playing Killzone 2 for a while, and for those that are still debating whether to buy this game or not or if this is better than Call of Duty 4 (not sure about World at War, that’s a different story), hope this will help you out a little. Its definitely a game worth buying but just not as good as Call of Duty 4. Again, that is only my opinion though!

  • Killzone 2

So finally I finished the single player side of Killzone 2, let me tell you, I have never played a first person shooter so intense for a long time. I can even say its more intense than Call of Duty 4 (sorry didn’t buy World at War). Then again COD 4 came out more than a year ago so its not fair to compare directly.

It took me roughly 7 hours and 15 minutes (3 days span) to complete the single player. The game gets really difficult and frustrating towards the end even in Trooper mode (which is for those with some FPS experience). There are four in total Recruit, Trooper, Veteran and Elite. I can’t really imagine myself playing anything harder than Trooper as it was hard enough, for me at least. The AIs are so random I had trouble fighting them and again a job well done to the developers. Sometimes they hide behind and wait for you, sometimes they will just rush you from different directions and sometimes throwing grenades at you to flush you out just to mention a few “moves” that us human players do.

    Killzone 2

Right after I finished the game, I immediately jumped into the Skirmish mode, which is basically the multiplayer game but instead you are playing with all AIs, or bots. I like this feature because I can practice on my shooting skills as well as getting familiar with the maps that you will be playing.

Killzone 2 has done a great job on the multiplayer side of the game. It incorporates similar leveling structure as COD with the experience points, you will unlock more weapons and such as you level your way up. I had my first run of the “real” multiplayer last night and I sucked big time with barely a 1:1 kill/death ratio or negative ratio. Mainly because I am still not use to the controls, the zoom/melee buttons still mess me up once in a while. Before you actually start playing, you can pick the games based on which type of missions you want such as Body Count which is really team deathmatch, search and destroy, protect VIP etc. What Killzone 2 offers differently instead of joining games that only play one of the mission types. You can join games that will play all of the mission types (I believe there are 5 in total) on a best out of three basis. The transition between missions are seamless, once the current one is done, you will immediately be playing the next mission with clear objectives.

    Killzone 2

You can also pick the games you like to join based on how many people per game. Up to 32 people can play in a single game which is extremely fun because more people equates to more killing and making it more of a battle than a mere gun fight with only a few people. Although the battles are not as intense as the single player due to the large map size but nevertheless its still extremely fun. I also did not notice ANY lag at all when playing the 32 player game which is an extra plus.

    [Update @ March 9th]
I have also unlocked 2 badge abilities, which are basically different job classes. I have unlocked the medic and engineer class. The medic will let you revive your friendly by “zapping” them, at a distance. While this is very useful, it is can also be annoying. As greatful as I am for those reviving me I really prefer you leave me alone and let me rot instead of reviving me in the middle of the battle field where grenades and bullets are raining down like crazy. Chances are, 90% of the time I will get hit again and die right away AGAIN. Ammo is pretty scarce in this game if you don’t have an engineer capable of reparing the ammo crate, takes a lot of ammo to take one guy down if using sub machine guns, unless you can do headshots all the time. The ammo problem is even more obvious when you first started without the ammo bonus. You really have to think before you shoot. So therefore, sometimes I prefer to die and get me some fresh ammo instead of returning to the battle with an empty gun and potentially die again while looking / picking up a gun.

Engineer is pretty fun in my opinion, you get to build turrets (there is a timer before you can build another one) that will shoot at any enemies, though not as strong and quick as you they are still capable of giving you a few kills through out the game. Placement is important, you don’t want to just place them anywhere but rather at choke points or places where you need to defend, specially when you are playing Search and Destroy, or Capture and Hold. I can’t wait until I level up to be able to repair the ammo grate because I really hate having so little ammo. Then again if you play as an Engineer, you start out with a shotgun with full ammo. Its also a good way to practice your shotgun skills, something I majorly lack, because either you kill or be killed if you miss your first shot.

After finishing the single player and starting my online multiplayer quest to be the best (near impossible!) for Killzone 2. I highly recommend this game to anyone that are into first person shooter, more so for the sci-fi fans because this is the Halo killer, or at least on par with Halo, for the PlayStation 3. It is definitely worth the $59.99+ tax price tag consider it comes with a long-lasting multiplayer game that will keep you busy for a long time, and this is coming out from a guy that doesn’t just go out there and buy any games.

  • call_of_duty_world_at_war_zombies

Based on joystiq‘s news back in Jan 2009, I am really happy and excited that Call of Duty 6, or Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will be coming out sometime this year. I made the right choice of NOT getting Call of Duty: World at War mainly due to the fact that its taken place back in the World War time, AGAIN! My friends also told me about the game being laggy as well as buggy that they decided to play COD 4 instead. Although the flame thrower and the zombie levels are really nice addition to the game.

I can’t wait until COD 6 comes out, I want to see what sort of modern weapons we will be introduced this time. Would it turn into a Battlefield-like game in which you can drive different vehicles around? Or would it stick to the previous series? I much prefer the latter because games feel quickly that way, in my opinion. And will the new Call of Duty have unlockable zombie levels too? I’m sold if that’s the case!

On the other hand, I hope it releases sometime end of the 2009, because I’ve just started getting a hang on Killzone 2. I think Killzone 2 is much harder to control compare to the COD series, which is much quicker and agile. Though Killzone 2′s multiplayer component is far superior than any other first person mutliplayer I have seen so far, it so addictive it literally glues you to your bed/chair and you will play for hours. I can’t imagine when I have both games to choose from, which one will I play when both are equally good. I guess that’s what happens when you have so many first person games out there, good ones too.

    But until then…..let us wait.

  • Killzone 2

I actually downloaded the demo for Killzone 2 last night just to make sure this game was worth it, and I was right about getting this game. Finally, another worthy PlayStation 3 exclusive added to my collection. I will divide the review into two parts, the single player which I will cover today and the multiplayer part at a later date. I think its a good idea to get used to the game play first before going online against the “pros”. Oh, and for those who have never heard of Killzone 2, its a sci-fi first person shooter first appeared on the PlayStation 2 and a sequel, Killzone: Liberation on the PlayStation Portable PSP.

    Game play and story
The story takes place in a planet called Helghan, the Helghast invaded Interplanetary Strategic Alliance (ISA) colony. Two years later, the ISA launched a counter attack on Helghast’s homeworld Helghan and in an attempt to capture the Helghast leader to bring the war to an end. Its a pretty straight forward bad vs evil scenario. That’s the “crash” version of the story. For more info on Killzone, visit the wiki for the game.

    Killzone 2 Killzone 2 Killzone 2

The control scheme is one of my “minor” complaints for this otherwise perfect sci-fi first person shooter. Probably because I’ve spent too much time playing Call of Duty 4 and got used to the COD 4 controls, after about 2 hours of intense battles I am still having trouble getting used to the controls. Although there are different schemes to choose from, there isn’t really one that fits me perfect like Call of Duty 4 and there is no customization at all which forces players to adapt to one of the preset control schemes. For example, the crouch and take cover is now L2 as oppose to circle in COD 4 which is, in my opinion, much more convenient. L1 is now your close combat which is another inconvenient setup. As a result I constantly mix up the zoom and close combat buttons during gun fights which are mostly intense. I guess I just have to get used to it, its just a matter of time.

Initially I thought the AIs in Killzone 2 were pretty dumb based on the trailers I’ve seen. But I was wrong, the AIs are actually pretty competitive, they will hide, or even camp a bit and wait for you. When in groups, one will throw a grenade at you and the other will charge towards you. They will also take cover and perform blind shots at you. You can take cover as well but I find it a little bit slow, you have to hold L2 to stay covered and you need to move your aim outward so that you can shoot while staying partially covered. You can also zoom in while in this mode but its easy to mess this up. So don’t think about going all Rambo at the AIs because chances are you won’t be able to last long, specially when there is no auto aim like COD. Also one thing to point out is that your movements are much slower compare to COD even if you max out the x and y axis sensitivity, in COD you are much more agile, even with the light machine gun. I guess its because you are wearing all these sci-fi gears so it makes sense that you move slower.

Just like COD, you can cook your grenades by holding down the throw button, what Killzone 2 does better than COD is that there is an indicator on the grenade that will tell you how “cooked” the grenade is.

    Killzone 2 Killzone 2 Killzone 2

Beside the grenades, there are also your standard rifles, rocket launcher, mounted machine guns (MG) which you can take cover behind as well as driving a tank. I don’t like the way they name the rifles though which consist of a bunch of letters and numbers which makes it hard, at least for me, to know which gun I have currently. By the way, you can only have one primary gun and a secondary hand gun which has unlimited ammo, but pretty weak.

    Killzone 2 Killzone 2 Killzone 2

There are instances where you will have to utilize the SIXAXIS controller to perform operations like rotating a valve or planting a bomb on the door. These little things add up and make the game more interesting and so you are not just running and shooting all the time.

I have finished 2 levels so far, and in between levels, the loading screen can also be tilted like a hologram with your SIXAXIS controller. Its pretty neat because you can do “something” while waiting for it to load. I have no problem with the loading screen between levels but I really hate the sudden lag cause by the load between sections within the same level.

    Graphics and audio
The graphics are simply amazing and jaw dropping. Although the game only runs on 720p as oppose to full HD 1080p at max, the details of the characters (specially the Helghast), the buildings, landscapes and vehicles are all very detailed. I particularly love blowing up air tanks or gas barrels, watch the explosions and the enemies fly in all directions.

In the audio department, nothing has impressed me yet so far. In my opinion, the conversations between your comrades and enemies feel “lively” with all the F and S words flying all over the place, but not overly used. Your enemies will also “talk” to you during gun fights so again you are not just running around and shooting things.

    Killzone 2

    Final verdict
Killzone 2, a near perfect sci-fi first person shoot will not disappoint existing Killzone fans as well as fans of first person shooter. If you are looking for something different from the COD or Halo series, Killzone 2 will be your perfect alternative. By no means I am not saying Killzone 2 is superior compare to the two series but its a nice change of style, more so when comparing to the COD series. If you are still debating, stop waiting and download the demo!

  • Its been more than 1 year since I got my copy of Call of Duty 4 for the PlayStation 3 and I am still crazy about this game. So far I have logged more than 7 days worth online, which is on average more than 40 minutes a day. I just can’t stop playing this game, mainly because I have always been into guns my whole life since my uncle introduced me to the world of BB guns when I was less than 10 years old! I used to be a Counter Strike addict since high school but as soon as COD 4 was released I jumped the boat almost right away. Honestly CS:S was getting a bit old, playing the same people/servers/maps (I used to play dust/dust2 24/7 servers by the way). Still it was and still is one of the best first person shooter out there in my opinion.

I was really and I mean REALLY tempted to buy Call of Duty: World at War, mainly because of its co-op multiplayer game mode, the flame thrower, the unlockable zombie level and finally one of my ex co-worker told me to get it because he is playing with my other ex co-workers (used to play COD4 with them almost every Thursday).

In the end I have decided not to get it simply because my preference for modern/futuristic first person shooter weights far more than the said reasons why I wanted to buy. Another deal breaker is the fact that I won’t have time to play both series since I hardly have time to play COD4 these days.

Even after the release of Call of Duty: World at War, I haven’t noticed any drop in players for COD4 at all. I guess I’m not the only one who prefers having modern wars, or maybe some people just have the time for both series.
Oh don’t get me wrong, I still miss the co-op missions, the mighty flame thrower and most of all, the unlockable zombie level! For those that have the game, I am sure you guys are enjoying it.

  • Its almost holiday season and I’m sure everyone’s looking for great games to play during that time. I have composed a list of top 10 games that I think its worth buying. Hope you guys will find the list helpful. They are not in any particular order.

    Dead Space

Dead Space – This has to be one of the best single player horror X sci-fi game I’ve ever played in years if not in my life. With innovative holographic menu system that is “real time” which means enemies can still attack you because the game is not paused, you don’t see any HP or ammo being displayed on the screen, instead you will see them on your character’s armor and the weapons. With this menu system, you can basically This makes the game more enjoyable because there is now nothing distracting you from the monster limb chopping you will surely enjoy. Audio is also nicely composed which really further makes the atmosphere even scarier.

    fallout 3

Fallout 3 – Similar to Oblivion released years back, this time taking place in post-apolcalyptic Washington D.C. in the year 2277. You will fight your way through raiders, mutants and ghouls. Killing anyone on your path including innocent people and become an evil or gain as much positive karma as you can to become a saviour or in between good and evil. Your karma will have direct affect between you and anyone you interact with. Aside from being able to switch between first and third person, Fallout 3 also introduces Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System or VATS which helps you “auto aim” at certain body parts or the same part (with the chance of hitting displayed) in bullet time style. Using VATS will drain your AP or Action Points which can be regained in time or by using items.

Finally, the world you are in is huge, and provide you many areas both up on the hills all the way to the underground into abandoned subway stations and caves to explore .

Guitar Hero World Tourrock band 2

Rock Band 2 / Guitar Hero World Tour – Two of the best musical / party / rock band game, play with up to three of your friends with mic, guitar and/or the drum. Some people prefer Rock Band while others say Guitar Hero World Tour is better. Well….guess it all depends on the person. I only have Guitar Hero and I’ve played Rock Band before at my friend’s house. I prefer the songs from Guitar Hero to be honest.

Left 4 Dead – I would say this is yet one of the best games of this year. You can play with up to 3 other players, bots or human and fight your way through zombie infested maps. The best feature of this game is that zombies can randomly pop out at you when you are least expected and the level of difficult is auto adjusted based on your performance. You can also have the option to play on the “dead” side as well. This game is very fast paced and really gives you the “rush/desperate” feel. Unfortunately this game is only for XBox 360 and PC owners.

Call of Duty World at War

Call of Duty: World at War – If you are into first person shooter, you should have played Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare by now. If not then something is obviously wrong with you in my opinion. COD: WAW takes place back in World War 2, I personally prefer modern time so I didn’t get this game. But COD: WAW offers 4 player co-op game play, a deadly flame thrower and you can unlock an extremely fun and increasingly difficult zombie stage after beating the game. This is a must for first person and/or World War fans, getting COD 4 is another safe buy as well. I’ve been playing COD 4 for over a year and I’m still not bored of it, this should tell you how good the COD series really is.

    WOW: Lich King

World of Warcraft: Lich King – One of the best MMORPG to date. I haven’t played WOW before and not planning to because I worry that I will get too addicted to it. I used to play and was hooked on Final Fantasy 11 for slightly less than 2 years in which it used up a lot of my time and so I had to call it a quit and said goodbye to my level 65 TaruTaru Dark knight…sigh. If you are a Warcraft fan, existing WOW player AND you have the time, I don’t see any reason why you should skip this expansion.

    Gears of War 2

Gears of War 2 – One of the best sci-fi third person shooter, unfortunately only available for the Xbox 360. Wish it would be ported over to the PlayStation 3 but I highly doubt it. I think this game is just as good as Call of Duty.

Buy Gears of War 2 on ebay

    Chrono Trigger

Chrono Trigger – One of the best RPG classic orginally released for the Super Nintendo. This turn based RPG created by SquareEnix has a rich story plot as well as amazing graphics (at the time of original release) and audio. RPG fans cannot miss this one!

    Buy Chrono Trigger on ebay

    the last remnant

The Last Remnant – Many people will probably disagree on this one. Even after seeing the all the graphical issues like texture popping and laggy frame rate during battles. I still think this is a great game, again by Square Enix, and its a perfect Japanese RPG game to play until Final Fantasy 13 comes out. I particularly like the new battle system where you are not just fighting with your group but also have the ablity to give simple commands to your ally groups. As a result battles are much bigger and longer. Too bad its only for XBox 360, PlayStation 3 owners will have to wait and hopefully those graphical issues will be resolved by then.
