  • I’ve been playing the Call of Duty series for years, many years, starting with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. From time to time I get messages from haters saying I’m a camper, or something similar but in a lot more offensive tone. That got me thinking, is what I am doing really considered camping? I do realize that staying at one spot for an extended period of time is camping, that’s obvious. But the thing is, I am far from doing that. I mean each game is roughly 7 minutes on average, what is the fun in doing that when I never play the sniper class?

I think I am just playing smart, I move out when I know or have some idea of where the enemies are and attempt to take them out. In a real life situation, would you jump out of no where and risk getting shot from every possible direction? Plus with World at War and Modern Warare 3′s wacky spawning issue, it is really hard to constantly be moving all over the place and sometimes you do have to buckle down in a spot for more than 5 seconds when enemies just keep pouring out of the same location.

What do you guys think? Am I really a camper? Or just a smart player trying to maximize the amount of kills and minimize my deaths for the team?

  • I recently got a product from Diamond Multimedia and have the pleasure to test out one of their video capturing devices using a USB stick. They sent me the VC500, one of the two video capture products they have (the other one is VC600). Don’t be mistaken the USB stick is not your everyday USB stick where you can store data in it but rather a device that will connect your gaming console, my PS3 for example, to your PC for video captures. I will update this review as I test and play around with the VC500.

So onto the unboxing! Nice packaging by the way, to me first impression is important, call me shallow but I love products with great packaging. Obviously great looks do not necessary mean great product. Just the first impression.
Diamond Multimedia VC500 one touch video capture

The only thing you need to install are the video and audio drivers from the CD provided. Pretty straight forward just like any other hardware driver installations (mouse, video card and web cam). The part where it took me a while due to experience is getting it to work. Perhaps it took a bit longer than I expected to get it to show the blue screen that tells you that you have connected the VC500 and your source properly, my PS3 in this case. Here is their quick demo using one of the three softwares that come with the CD called ArcSoft ShowBiz:

The other thing I had to change was from PAL (by default) to NTSC_M since we are in North America and I was all set and ready to capture my first ever video from a gaming console to my PC. Unfortunately I only have HDMI or the RCA (composite) cables and no S component, the highest I got for my video was 420p. You will also notice its choppy as well as the sound and video are out of synch. I have posted a comment on their youtube video page and hopefully I get a reply regarding this. I hope its not because of my ATI HD5670 video card being too out of date.

    Here is my result:

Now let’s talk about the software ArcSoft ShowBiz. So far I find it really easy to use, the only setting I had to change was the PAL to NTSC_M under Device setting -> Video decoder. All I needed to do to start recording was by pressing the red “Capture” button just below the screen. You also have the option to perform screen capture during the recording as well as going full screen. Click the same button but in green letters “Stop” to stop the recording. Video formats available are MPEG1/2, AVI and WMV.

Once I had my first video recorded, it was just a click away from uploading to YouTube. ARcSoft ShowBiz has a built-in YouTube integration so you can upload videos within the program. Unfortunately I had problems uploading to YouTube as I kept getting the error about losing internet connection, this is something I need to ask them. I therefore, uploaded manually through YouTube instead.

So far I like what I see. One small complain I have though would be the quick start guide is a bit too “quick”. If it had more info such as how to run those softwares, even just briefly, would be more helpful. It basically just tells you to run the CD and install the drivers. Another complain, a bigger one in my opinion, is that it doesn’t come with y splitters. Y splitters are to split the output to two sources. In order to play on both the PS3 and record at the same time I need to output to two destinations. It would also be great if they could include a pack of 3 Y splitters for the RCA/component cables. I still have to buy them as I am currently connecting my PS3 directly to VC500 and I was actually playing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare on my PC monitor.

  • Battlefield Play4Free looks pretty promising even though it doesn’t have the best graphics but doesn’t mean it will be a bad game. So far based on the trailer, I am more than convinced the game will be worth playing on PC until I get a new PS3 next year. Yes, mine overheated (yellow light of death) again for the second time and died a total of 3 times with the first one being the Blu-ray control board dead.

I’ve already paid $180 to Sony to fix the control board issue, then another $90 to resoldered the board for the first overheat. I am not going to pay another $90 just to have it resoldered and get it fried again. I might as well accept the fact that I bought a lemon. There is no chance in hell I am going to fork out money to fix this, I’ve already forked out enough to buy a new one almost.

    So what’s the point?

One reason I believe its a lemon is the fact that, the second overheat happened after 2 games of Call of Duty, don’t tell me the console will overheat after 2 games which lasted for less than 20 minutes. My friend joked its probably because the game got to intense. I laughed out loud.

  • Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X. 2 - AC-130 failed
So Gametrailers post this “AC-130 Massacre Gameplay” and ironically I think this is a massacre for the game, well at least this AC130 part. Although I am a Call of Duty fan, by all means I am not a fan boy since I do have a fair share of negative feedbacks for it. But let’s not go back there again.

So I was not too impressed with the way you get to rain fire from the AC-130, I didn’t hear any reload at all from its cannon like in the Call of Duty version. That alone was enough for me to say no to this game. The sound effect is just isn’t there, even the ones that I could barely hear weren’t engaging enough. The whole thing resulted in a very boring game play in my opinion.

And as for the actual flight mode where you get to fly other figher jets, well, let’s just say after playing the demo over the weekend, I still prefer the Ace Combat series.

  • aliens vs predator

I’ve always wanted to play the original Aliens vs Predator but never, ever got a chance to. I think this time I won’t miss it, I can’t. Not after watching all these promising trailers. I have a strong feeling that this game is going to be worth it. I was right about not getting Dark Void, didn’t even bother trying the demo and I was right. The review from GameTrailers said it all.

Well, why do I think this game is worth buying the very first day? The fact that it has a mix of sci-fi, survival horror and first person shooter is more than enough to convince me. Much like Dead Space, another great sci-fi x survival horror x FPS game. Only this time, instead of playing as human only, you get to play Alien or the Predator as well! I’ve always thought Predator was cool and I still think it (he?) is with its feel-so-over-powering cloaking ability. Sort of the uglier version of Snake from Metal Gear Solid. Well maybe just the stealth part.

    aliens vs predator

Alien on the other hand, is for those who are into quick and heavy melee attacks. I’m guessing the only range attacks are its tail jab and spitting poision from its inner mouth like the Hydralisk from Starcraft?

And finally the human will be for the newbies or you are really a fan of yourself – human. I’m sure each side has its own strengths and weaknesses.

I’m also excited about the single or co-op survival mode (the mode where you find endless waves of enemies), which I expected Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 to have. Now finally I get to play this mode without having to buy Call of Duty: World at War. WHen this comes out, I wonder I will still be playing MW2 as much as I have been or will it finally be dethroned.

Aliens vs Predators will be out 2 days after Valentine’s Day, Feb 16th 2010. Which side will you be on?

And boy check out these crazy death moves!

  • So finally a new Medal of Honor, which looks promising, will be released second half of 2010. Can it compete against or even “pwn” the almighty Call of Duty series, mainly Call of Duty 4, 5 and Modern Warfare 2? Seriously we need more than just these cinematic teasers, we need some from actual game plays!

  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, one of the most anticipated game this year has been out for more than a week. If I was to summarize the game in two words, I would say its “almost perfect”. Definitely a game worth the full $64.99CAD (+tax) first day purchase with absolutely zero regret.

The first one, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare has a pretty sweet single player story line with a lot of drama. The sequel’s story line is even more, how should I put it, “messed up” and packed with even more drama. Words cannot possibly describe how good I think it is, you have to buy it and see it for yourself. Its not just the story that got “super-sized” but the characters are also noticably more detailed, at least to me, while the environments look relatively similar to Call of Duty 4.

This time around, you won’t be blowing up your enemies from above using the AC-130 Gunship but you get to be the gunner of an armored humvee, life boat as well as snowmobile chases.

You can expect to finish the single player story in about 7 hours, but that is ok since this game is made for multiplayer.

There are also new and more weapons to choose from (same ones sound different now as well! M4A1 for example). This time even the rocket launcher and stinger missle launcher are available in multiplayer which were only available in the first game’s single player missions. I also love the fact that you have 3 times more ammo (correction: the reason why I got full ammo was due to the Scavenger perk) for your guns and you can carry a secondary, but not necessary limited to just a hand gun, such as shotguns, grenade launcher or even a rocket launcher. Though you only get to carry one or two shots from the launchers and no way to reload unless you get the Resupply crate from kill streak perk or the Scavenger perk, which in my opinion, very useful in staying fully equipped all the time.

Another great addition to Modern Warfare 2 is the game allows you to customize your own kill streak bonuses, from 3 kill streak UAV all the way to a whooping 25 kill streak for the almighty tactical nuke (sorry I’m not THAT good). I would search youtube if you want to see what it looks like, I’ve done the search for you.

I really like the random care package by getting a mere 4 kill streak, you can pretty much get anything from this, not sure if you can get the tactical nuke from it though! (Funny incident: I killed myself by accident from the crate by crouching right on top of the drop point)

In one of the kill streak bonuses, you get to be the actual gunner of the attack helicopter. While its fun raining bullets down on your enemies from the sky, I think this one, which you can get from an 11 kill streak, a bit over powered. If you get that and the other team is too dumb to shoot it down then you basically are garanteed 10 to 15+ kills just from this.

So here’s my quick summary of this fantasy game, if you liked Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, you will certainly like this one, well, most likely. I mean I’m sure you want to know the rest of the story too, and the ending leaves room for Modern Warfare 3, which I cannot wait.

Hmmm maybe it will be released some time 2011 November? :)

  • I was so so so close to getting Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising. Mainly because I wanted something other than Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare for a change. Also, the trailers so far were quite promising as well and it did look realistic, compare to the COD series.

I’m glad I always troll around Gametrailers.com and read their take on this game before I slap myself for wasting $70 bucks on this disappointing game. You can see the negative points of this game clearly outweights the goods. For one, why does the console multiplayer only support 4 on 4? What were the developers thinking?

    Operation Flashpoint: DR review

If you are looking for a shoot them up, this isn’t for you. Do give it a shot (I’m sure you can refund it) if and only if you are into realistic war-simulator. Sadly I guess the sequel did not live up to the original Operation Flashpoint and it just won’t even stand close to the soon-to-be-released Modern Warfare 2.
