  • Digital Building – Contemporary Design for Seco...
By on November 4th, 2008 | No Comments Comments

I finally had the time to get back to my architecture/interior design hobby recently. I’m actually not too happy with the exterior design of my previous design – Basic Blocks – Contemporary Home. It was just way too plain and I admit I didn’t put too much thoughts into it and spent nearly 100% to interior design.

This time I focused on the exterior just as much as the interior and based my idea on the Digital Beijing Building by the talented Studio Pei-Zhu.

I love how the blue lights are “escaping” from the gaps between the columns which really gives the digital as well as the “Matrix” impression to the whole design. In addition to having those blue lights on both sides, they are also visible and extend from the front of the building all the way to the back of the building.

The building consists of two floors with each floor measuring approximately 40m long, 20m wide and 10m high. The prim count (the number of objects) is a bit more than usual mainly because of the “digital” design on the two walls on the sides. The two entrances are well hidden so people will not be able to see them and makes the “digital” flow from front to back without the entrances interrupting it. I have also made heavy use of the “glow” effect both inside and out for the extra lighting effect.

Overall I am very pleased with this design (finally) and hopefully my next project will be just as fun and satisfying to design and build as this one. Hope you guys like this one as well!

  • Speech by laser helped brain damaged girl, 6, to say ...
By on October 31st, 2008 | No Comments Comments

I actually found out about this through Digg but the actual article is from MailOnline. This has to be one of the most touching news I have heard in the past 6 months or possibly more. How would you feel if you had a old daugther who was born brain damaged said to you “I Love You” for the first time in 6 years?

With the help of modern technology, a £17,000 MyTobii Smartbox machine from Sweden, which tracks the eye movement of the person, in this case little 6 year old Elke Wisbey’s, detects which icon she is looking at and speaks out the word or phrase for her. Her first word, or phrase rather, is “I Love You”. At first her parents thought the system was “stuck” but when her father asked her if she said “I Love You” to them, she answered “Yes”.

I’m very happy for her and her family now that their local newspaper helped raise the money to buy the machine for them. Though this girl has severe brain damage but she quickly learned to use the machine to play games and even surf the internet with it.

I hope that this technology will become more affordable for even the less fortunate people with brain damage. It makes a huge difference because this will help bridge the communication gap between these people and their relatives.

  • Lap-Band Surgery – lose that extra pound!
By on September 15th, 2008 | No Comments Comments

Lap-Band surgery is one of many ways to lose the extra unwanted weight and is considered to be the least invasive bariatric surgery available. Each surgery generally takes about 40 minutes where patients can leave a few hours after post surgery and be ready for work or any normal activities within 4-5 days. Unlike many other relatively more invasive operations, Lap-Ban surgery only requires a very small incision in the stomach to allow a small restrictive device; however, you may want to get supplements from healthyusa to prepare your stomach first. The device consists of a small band with a balloon inside that is filled with a saline solution around the top section of the stomach and connected to a tube and in the end with a access control switch that will control the amount of “contraction” of the band. This contraction slows down food from going into the stomach and makes the patient feel full for a longer period of time. The band also creates a “pouch” in the upper stomach which holds less food than the rest of the stomach and therefore making the patient eat less.

If you want to learn more about Lap-Band Surgery, one of the specialists performing such operation is Dr. Richard E. Collier and his office is located at Conroe, Texas. He also provides free weekly seminars for those interested to learn more.

His web site is easy to navigate and packed with useful information from about himself, Lap-Band FAQ, nutritional info, body mass info to testimonials etc.

  • Large Hadron Collider got banged!
By on September 12th, 2008 | No Comments Comments

The $8 billion dollar Large Hadron Collider, a system that will help test and answer some of the universe’s questions such as the Big Bang theory, was hacked last Friday. The system that was hacked was reportedly “one step away” from a control computer but did not cause any major damage.

There were many people rejecting the machine and the experiment because they believed if something went wrong, it would create black holes that would eat up the earth. Well I don’t blame them since not everyone is a scientist. Well, we are still alive after the initial test. :)

I just checked the CERN web site and it wasn’t working for some reason. Hacked again? Or too much traffic?

Scientists invovled in this experiment have been receiving death threats from phone calls and emails.

  • The Toronto I know today
    By on August 27th, 2008 | 1 Comment1 Comment Comments

My first non tech related article.

I came to Toronto, Canada when I was one month shy of being 12. Back then, Toronto was a more affordable place to live in compare to now. I’m no expert in politics nor I know much about how our Government functions but with a ridiculous tax that will be effective on Monday September 1st as well as recent decision made by our Prime Minister Stephen Harper just make me think why do we keep on electing incompetent leaders to lead our city.

After the land transfer tax that became effective since Feb 1st of this year, we now have yet another new tax coming that will haunt us for as long as I can foresee. The new vehicle tax, which will be effective on September 1st will be applied to all personal vehicles only. The tax will charge motorists $60 for a car and $30 for a motorcycle every time a license plate has to be renewed. That is on top of $70 something dollars that we have to pay to renew our plates for one year. And you can’t just not pay it, no pay no plate renewed, simple as that. Those who submit for renewal before August 31st and are renewing for two years can escape the fee until 2010.

I just read the news today (August 27), that our Prime Minister Stephen Harper is calling for an election after being in the office for two and a half years. The first thing that comes to mind, with common sense, is that he is trying to walk away from all these troubles and difficulties that we are facing in Toronto. He stated he has trouble working with the opposition party and that if his office cannot be productive then people should elect someone that can. Yet another irresponsible statement in my opinion.

Finally, what was the point of reducing GST, that was barely noticeable when buying everyday needs? The GST reduction was quickly blanketed by all these taxes that were introduced this year. There was really no tax breaks at all, the government is basically taking some percentage here and put it elsewhere, if not adding more. Living in Toronto is getting so expensive nowadays along with the gas hikes (but I won’t discuss it here since its not just in Toronto, gas prices are rising everywhere). I feel unjust that we have to pay for all these taxes and the government is still having trouble balancing our budget, where did all our money go?

Thank you for hearing my rant and please feel free to correct me as I’m only writing based on what I see and how I feel.
