  • Rogers raises internet and cable fees yet again.
By on February 19th, 2009 | No Comments Comments

I haven’t written a daily rant for a while, I have to get this off my head. TheStar.com reported that our cable, home phone and wiresless monopoly giant Rogers Communications Inc., is once again raising their internet (3-9% except the Extreme Plus plan) and cable fees (5% for basic cable), effective March 1st. In my opinion, this is a very bad move for Rogers specially after reporting a $138 million fourth-quarter loss, according to TheStars. They are already losing new customers in the last quarter, now they decided to raise fees, yet again and we, as customers are furious. Not only they are losing new customers, they are also losing their existing ones because there are other providers that provides similar services, if not better, for a much more reasonable price.

One such company is Primus, their bundle which includes home phone, calling features (Call Display, Voice Mail, & Visual Call Waiting plus), high speed internet and unlimited long distance between Canada and US, offers more than 30% of savings compare to Rogers or Bell. Unfortunately they do not provide cable services. I’m not trying to sell you anything and there is no affiliate links anywhere in the post but rather trying to point out how much premium Rogers and Bell are charging us.

I have a feeling that Rogers’ first quarter isn’t going to be too bright either after this raise. So basically we are now paying more for the same services, if not worse (and its pretty well known that their customer service is terrible). Although I understand a company should focus on making a profit, I still don’t think it makes sense to raise any fees during this global economic slump. They might be able to suck some money from us for a short period of time, once people discover there are cheaper alternatives, they will start to lose even more in the long run.

  • Download and play free games @ iWin.com
By on January 22nd, 2009 | No Comments Comments

So here I am searching for more free games online again. This time I stumble upon iWin. Instead of playing the games on your browser, you actually download games to your computer. Before you can actually download any games, you will need to download a small program called iWin Games Manager which is a very nice program to organize the download queue for the games. You can also use the manager to browse through the games just like you do on your browser.

iWin has over 100 free game downloads to choose from. These games have ads that last for 15 seconds before you can play, you can purchase the ad free version for as low as $6.99. There are also many games in the Steals & Deals section for much cheaper games. Consider the quality of these games are pretty decent, the 15 seconds is worth the wait.

There are different types of games to play, ranging from puzzle games , action games, board/card games and a kids section where the games are for kids of all ages.

I like how they have an info page for each game with actual screen shots of the game. This gives a better idea of how the game is like before actually downloading it. You can also sign up for iCoin, its basically a membership. There are three memberships for you to choose from which you can save up to 65% and you will also get bonus games with any type of membership as well.

So if you and/or your children are looking for casual games that are cheap and fun, pay iWin a visit!

If you are looking for reliable web hosting service provider and have no idea where to start the web hosting shopping, you should check out Web Hosting Rating first. Web Hosting Rating provides over hundred web hosting articles which will no doubt give you more than enough to get you started. It also has a top 10 web hosting providers on the side which should cut down some web hosting provider hunting time. Those ones listed on the site are pretty much what you need. You can also find out about web hosting directories and even submit your own web hosting company.

The articles are categorized into 17 categories. For example, if you are starting your own online business, then you should check out the E-commerce section. Each category are packed with helpful and detailed information. Again take the E-commerce category for example, it explains anything from considerations when starting your own E-commerce to basic E-commerce strategies.

Aside from searching the articles by categories, you can also search by Post Tags such as these widely searched phrases cheap hosting or reseller hosting. Again you will find tons of useful info this way as well. But I prefer searching by categories.

Overall I think Web Hosting Rating provides great information whether you are looking into buying web hosting service or you are just curious. This site should have more than enough for you to read.

  • Want a Cdn$122,000 dream job? Apply now!
By on January 13th, 2009 | No Comments Comments

Want a Cdn$122,000 dream job? Apply now!

This is actually NOT a joke. I just read this from CityNews that Tourism Queensland will be selecting 50 + 1 (wildcard) lucky people from 30,000 applicants. The annual salary is a whooping Cdn$122,000 for 6 months (that’s an average of 20k a month before tax!). In order to apply, you will need to create and submit a no longer than one minute video. They are looking for “someone with an adventurous attitude, passion for the outdoors and good communication skills” and also the following (taken from CityNews):

    - Enthusiasm for the role
    - Entertainment value (personality and creativity)
    - Presentation skills (being media-friendly)
    - At least one year’s relevant experience

All applicants will also need to have an in-person interview between May 3rd and May 7th.

You will probably ask no way, what’s the catch? I don’t consider the catches….well catches! First you have to move to Australia for 6 months to live close to a warm beach and almost everything is paid for such as a luxurious three bedroom, two bathroom home with kitchen, state of the art entertainment system, a dune buggy etc.

And what’s your job? Well, you have to blog about your stay everyday, collect some mail once a day, cleaning your swimming pool that has its own filtering so its easy task and finally feeding 1,500 different species of fish.

What’s worse is you have to blog about your tasks like scuba diving, snorkeling, sailing, hiking, picnicking and check the facilities at 25 of the island’s resorts by dune buggy everyday. Oh man, so much “work”! (sarcasm)

Obviously this is PR, a pretty attractive one too by Tourism Queensland. If you are looking for a job or just interested in trying out for a dream of a life time, I mean who wouldn’t? Visit Island Reef Job (the site is down or really slow though but I wonder why). And oh yea there’s no age limit and anyone around the world can apply. The deadline is February 22nd, so better start making that video!

  • Free file extension repair advice
By on January 8th, 2009 | No Comments Comments

There are so many different file formats these days and you can never know ALL of them or what they do. Tons of computer programs are related to bad registries from installed programs and/or previously installed programs but which are removed. There will be bits and pieces left behind when uninstalling programs.

computer.fileextensions.com provides free download to its registry scanner. Many of these issues can be resolved by simply performing registry scans and the scanner will find out any registry problems and fix them accordingly. For example, if you have problem with the file extension DLL or the file extension TMP, you can simply use the scanner and figure out what the problem is.

The site also provides an extensive and sorted list of file extensions and you can add notes to each extension if you want people to be awared of something in particular. Some extensions also tell you ways to open files with those extensions so you can download the corresponding program to open them. Again for example, if you don’t know which program you need in order to open files with the file extension DMG, you simply look for DMG and in the list and you can find out which program to use.

By on December 29th, 2008 | No Comments Comments

I’m sure a lot of you have at least one web site and I am also sure ALL of you want as much exposure and traffic to your site as possible. Traffic, and preferably quality traffic, is one of the most critial keys to enable you to monetize your web site.

In order to drive quality traffic is by ranking high on search results from search engines like Google, Yahoo and MSN etc. Search engine optimization or SEO in short will enable you to achieve this goal. SEO can be intimidating to many people, especially for beginners because they have to deal with finding quality keywords, keyword phrases and long tail keywords which is just one of many tasks you have to do when performing SEO. There are companies that provide effective SEO for your web site and one such company is iMajestic Internet Marketers. Established since 2001, iMajestic not only provide search engine optimization but also provide other optimization services such as pay per click, local search, reputation and social media to complete web development.

What iMajestic differs from other SEO service providers is the fact that you only have to pay after your desired goals like keyword ranking in particular search engines, for example, is achieved and maintained. This performance based service is perfect for those worried about not getting the results they asked for because now they don’t have to pay a cent if they don’t see the expected results.

By on December 28th, 2008 | No Comments Comments

I was looking for web site templates and I stumbled upon EasyTemplates.com. The first word that came out of my mouth (literally) was “WOW!” after previewing this Flash template. This is only one of many Flash templates available from the site and it also offers traditional HTML templates, as well as e-commerce templates that utilize PHP and mySQL database. The templates are categorized to suit everyone’s needs.

Why do I recommend these Easy Templates? You can edit the text, button labels, email form, background music, and pictures in Notepad or any other text editor. So anyone, even those who don’t know anything about Flash can make changes to personalize their web site. If you don’t want 100% Flash only website but rather a normal HTML website template with Flash elements at the top, Easy Templates offers templates with both HTML and Flash elements. There are also the more advanced Flash Templates for those that know Macromedia FLASH MX 7.0 , 8.0 or CS3/4. For photographers, with over 50 Flash photography templates to choose from, they can use these photo album templates made to show off their photographs, in a “Flashy” way.

The price for these templates are also resonable that range from USD$42 for a Flash intro template or you can have your own full-blown YouTube-style video web site to share movies with friends or to your potential customers for a mere USD$199.

Also want to note that EasyTemplates.com also offers its customers a 1-year free web hosting and for $1 per month from then on through Hostgator. Honestly you really can’t find a hosting service for $1 a month.

So if you are looking for professionally done web site templates, be it written in HTML or Flash, take a look at what EasyTemplates.com has to offer.
