  • My frustration with Rogers SMCD3GN modem
    By admin on April 2nd, 2011 | 95 Comments95 Comments Comments

So recently we upgraded our Rogers Internet to Extreme and they gave us another modem, this one is almost twice the size of my previous one, called SMCD3GN. The reason for the size is probably because it acts as both the cable modem as well as a wireless router. This is where my frustration began as I’ve just reconfigured my wireless network a few days ago with a brand new D-Link 632 wireless router.

It basically took me the whole night and I was still unable to find the cause of my problem. The problem of not being able to access the Internet through my wireless router. Although I was able to quick verify nothing was wrong with the new cable modem, I was baffled with what could be the reason. I knew that something in my wireless router or in between my wireless router and the cable modem is blocking Internet access to my PC which is connected to the LAN with a physical cable. In the end, Google was my friend as I stumbled upon a couple of pages and finally found the problem.

The problem was originated from the new Rogers cable modem and the fact that it can act as an all in one cable modem/wireless router. First problem, it acts as a gateway and blocks all other Internet access to other routers (I don’t know too much in detail about this). So if you encounter this problem, the first thing you should do is disconnect your PC – wireless router connection, plug your cable modem directly to your PC. Then access the control panel or admin console by typing in 192.168.0.1 in your broswer. There you will find the second problem which is the login and password information which is no where to be found in the provided cable modem box at all. I had to find that in a tech forum. And that one does not even give me full access to the cable modem. I finally found this site which solved my problem by providing me the second set of login which gives you the ability to disable all commercial gateway. The login and password are rogcesadmin and wra8uje respectively.

On the system page you will see that option right away. But before you disable the “disable all commercial gateway functions” function please disable wireless function in the Wireless section first. Reason being the wireless capability of the cable modem, as tested by the author of the site I mentioned, was horrible. As it doesn’t have any physical external antenna to broadcast the wireless signals you can imagine how reliable the wireless functionality it really is. Once you have disabled the wireless function go back to the System section and disable the “disable all commercial gateway functions” function which will reboot your cable modem.

Once rebooted, reconnect your cable modem back to your wireless router and your PC to one of the LAN ports in the wireless router and you should be good to go.

I hope this helps those that are having this issue and don’t have to go through what I have gone through just to figure this out. I can’t imagine any non tech-savvy person trying to figure this out on their own. I guess they can always call their support line, which I personally find a waste of time. Again please visit the site for more detailed instructions with image.

    [Update @ 2011 12 24th]
Thank you ED and Hagie for providing two other sets of login/password details. Seems that the login info changes with different models of the modem.

  • Its good to have an external battery for your PSP
By admin on March 26th, 2011 | No Comments Comments

I’ve recently got my hands on Gundam G Generation World for my PSP and I’ve been having a hard time putting my PSP down because its so addictive! But that’s not the point of this post though.

Since I’ve been playing my PSP for hours everyday its no surprise the battery will be drained very quickly. But fortunately I have my trusty and external portable charger for my PSP. With this little portable charger I can continue playing for hours more without having to connect the original power cable. I also don’t have to worry about tripping over the power cable because the charger is small, literally the size of normal person’s palm. That’s why I always have this portable charger handy as it not only charges PSP, it also charges iPads, iPods, NDS, mp3 players and many more because it comes with 8 different adapters/connectors. And this portable charger, the E500i, in particular has a power capacity of 5000mAh @ 3.7V so you can at least get a few rounds of charges for your devices before it runs out of juice. Also the E500i also has two charging outlets so that means you can charge two devices at the same time which is a plus for me since I always use my PSP and my mp3 player.

The E500i not only provides on-demand power whenever your devices need and since it is small, it makes it a perfect for travelling. With the 8 adapters/connectors that come with the portable charger, this turns into a multi-device charger without the need to carry multiple cables/adapters/connectors, something I really hate.

  • Ultimate Gadgets’ Mobile Charger

    E80i Power Bank Mobile Charger

I’m very happy to say to all gadget-philes that there’s finally a solution to powering all your gadgets minus the hassle of lugging around three or more chargers wherever you go. Power to the Max (http://www.powertothemax.com/) owes no allegiance to any particular brand or mobile gadget that they came up with universal chargers that not only accommodate the popular iPhones and iPads, their portable chargers can power a wide range of gadgets like PDAs, other big mobile phone brands, MP3 / MP4 players, PSPs, and a whole lot more.

    PB21X Portable Battery Pack

Why hasn’t anyone else thought of these sooner? For those of us who go around a lot, we have to put up with packing a bunch of chargers and sometimes adaptors. Sometimes we can’t even keep up with the chargers anymore and forget or lose one, rendering one of our favorite toys a dead weight in our luggage. We can probably say goodbye to those days with these universal battery chargers that don’t punish us for our choices of having diversified gadgets.

    PB12 Mini Portable Battery Pack<br />

What’s more is that we won’t have to worry about a sudden shortage of sockets! These battery chargers are portable and the developers claim a number of charging cycles of up to five times with simultaneous charging of two devices from their highest end model which only costs USD$54 at the time of this writing. I’d say that’s a pretty sweet deal. Of course if you’re not a prolific user of multiple gadgets, there are practical and cheaper choices for you that start at USD$26. So far their benchmark for charging cycles is of typical mobile phones. I can’t wait to hear about their results with other products.

    E80i Power Bank Mobile Charger

Their chargers, in my opinion, are promising devices for uninterrupted gaming experience on the go, non-stop music and keeping our mobile phones on. They sure thought of putting everything in one handy kit that I only have to worry about adaptors when I travel overseas. You’re probably thinking their chargers are too good to be true and if they’re safe for your iPhone. One of their models was designed specifically to suit Apple fans. True to the lifestyle that comes with the use of any “iGadget”, the model is ultra slim, lightweight and is certified to meet the performance standards of Apple’s products. But their chargers are not exclusive to any one’s personal taste as they designed each one with flexibility and ease of use. They’re very convenient for you, your family and your crew when you do a lot of traveling or you’re out and about a lot.

These iPhone or iPad battery chargers will finally be available come January 2011. If there’s anything post Christmas that’s essential, it would be that one charger that rules them all gadgets and that one charger that binds them. I can’t wait to grab one of these from their store.

  • If you liked Dead Space, you would love Dead Space 2
By admin on February 13th, 2011 | No Comments Comments

    Dead Space 2

So I finally finishe Dead Space 2 and it was a blast! I would say the game is near perfect in my opinion. From start to finish it was full of none stop action and suspense where the game got me a few times and made me jump. Towards the end I didn’t expect I had to deal with so many necromorphs, they just kept on popping up here and there and that was fun! My only complain is the final boss fight and I will let you guys see for yourselves instead of me spoiling everything.

    Dead Space 2

Dead Space 2 introduced a few new guns but I seriously think the previous ones like the trusty plasma cutter, pulse rifle and the very powerful (even without upgrade) line gun, were more than enough to fight off any mobs of necromorphs. I did use the “sniper” seeker rifle from the beginning of obtaining it to the end. Definitely provided me with different ways of dismembering the necromorphs.

The game also introduced a few new types of necromorphs, the Crawler (exploding baby), Stalker and Pack along with the old “cast” like Slasher, the Brute and Lurker (see a full list here). Surprisingly there were a lot of boss encounters like the previous game, which is also one of the downfall of the game. But like I said, the game pace was so intense for me that didn’t bother me too much. Though I did miss killing the The Leviathan or The Hive Mind.

The sound effect, as usual, gave me the creeps and kept me alert and awake all the time. Funny how the necromorphs only appeared when I least expected! Good job on that.

I played a couple of multiplayer and honestly it wasn’t as bad as people said. But for sure it DOES require teamwork otherwise you will not achieve anything acting like Rambo. One thing is true though, is the fact that humans are a bit overpowered at times so you really have to play smart if you are playing as necromorphs. Sort of like Zerg from Starcraft, you really have to know when to swamp at the humans. Here’s a (obviously) tip, try not to go head on!

For all that PLUS it includes the rail shooter game Dead Space Extraction, originally from the Wii, I give Dead Space 2 a 9/10.

Perhaps there will be a third one?

  • This is what all game companies should do – FREE DLC
By admin on January 18th, 2011 | No Comments Comments

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood Animus Project Update 2.0

Why can’t more game companies be like Ubisoft? Why can’t they make us gamers happier and stop milking us to death? After all, we are the ones keeping them alive. Look at the DLCs for the Modern Warfare series, they (Treyarch) recently said they have listened to the fans and created DLC maps for us, well I guess they didn’t listen hard enough. We said it many many times we didn’t want and we still don’t want to pay for the DLCs, especially rehashed maps like the ones from Modern Warfare 2 DLC.

Keeping your fans happy goes a long way game companies and Ubisoft is doing the right thing. Good job Ubisoft for releasing Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood Animus Project Update 2.0 for FREE!

    Mark Leung
I actually found this while messing around on Facebook and the fan page is called Mark Leung. As quoted from the fan page “Mark Leung’ is a parody RPG series for PC. Our game features deep class customization, cosplayed cut scenes and a bunch of f*cked up side quests.”. Aside from the actual downloadable game demo on markleung.com, there are also a 4 part series movie called College Saga. This movie sure brought back a lot of Final Fantasy and Zelda memories. Everyone, not just RPG fans, should check it out from the Facebook fan page.

You will probably not read this but good job Mark, you make us Chinese proud! :)
