  • Fastest RC car in the world – Traxxas XO-1
By admin on December 5th, 2011 | No Comments Comments

When I first saw the news on my Facebook page with the Title “Is this the world’s cheapest supercar?” I thought it was a real car. But it turns out its actually a radio control, or RC, race car that is capable of going from 0-62mph in a mere 2.3 seconds. That also means 0.16 seconds faster than the ugly, but super fast Bugatti Veyron. You can have the world’s fastest RC car for only £700, which in my opinion, is a pretty reasonable price.

My concerns are, where on earth can you actually race this besides a real race track as shown in the youtube video below. And I bet I need binoculars just to keep “track” of where it is. Even then its tough when its only 27 inches long. I also can’t imagine the repair cost for this car if it crashes, given the speed it can go, I am pretty sure it will be rendered unrepairable and there goes your £700.

But I still want this for Christmas! It would make my Christmas if I could review it for one day. Heck! Even half a day!

Check out the youtube video: (there are more obviously)

  • Battlefield 3 vs Modern Warfare 3
By admin on November 23rd, 2011 | No Comments Comments

You’ve probably seen this comparison thousands of times. And its normal to see these two games being compared over and over again as new versions come out. There are fanboys from both sides bashing each other similar to PS3 vs Xbox 360 fanboys. I originally bought Battlefield 3 because I wanted a change (been playing the MW series for more than 3 years). And just yesterday I could resist but bought Modern Warfare 3 as well after trading in another game at EB Games.

Modern Warfare 3 is nothing special on the single player side, same graphics but new story (picked up from where last game left off), weapons and its still action packed. I was able to get back in the “game” almost right away after getting re-used to the controls. I have yet to play the multiplayer but I can imagine its the same fast pace, arcade-ish feel like previous titles.

So now comes the comparison, in my opinion, there’s none. Battlefield 3 is a slower paced and more realistic first person shooter with more players, bigger maps and you can drive vehicles. On the other hand Modern Warfare 3 is faster paced and less realistic, noticeably much less recoil from firing guns. But Modern Warfare does come with zombie mode (World at War and Black Ops) and this time there’s a survival mode where you fight off waves of enemies, buy/upgrade your weapons similar to zombie mode but without the zombies. This is the one feature I’m looking forward to after I finish the single player.

I think that both games actually compliment each other because they provide two distinct styles of game play for us gamers. When you want to get totally serious, play Battlefield 3. When you just want a few quickie games then play Modern Warfare 3.

Now can we just shut up and play the games? Both are great games with their pros and cons. So in the end, you cannot argue which is ultimately better. And guess what? They are both best sellers in the first person shooting genre.

  • Product review – Proporta iPhone 4/4S cases
By admin on November 3rd, 2011 | No Comments Comments

I’ve finally received the iPhone cases from Proporta, I guess I should call it products review since they were nice enough to send me not one but three cases to write about as well as a bag of Yorkshire Tea and a postcard. I just wanted to say thank you again.

The three cases I got were the Shine Case, the Ted Baker Hard Shell Case II and finally my favorite of all, the Doodle Pad Hard Shell. All of them are designed for iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S. The latter two are for the back and sides of the iPhone 4/4S only.

    The fit:
All three cases fit nearly perfectly, I suspect its due to my white iPhone’s slight difference in size from its black counterpart. For the Ted Baker Hard Shell Case II and the Doodle Pad Hard Shell, it may take a bit more effort to remove the case once its “clipped” on, again its probably because the white iPhone is marginally bigger? Mind you, this is not solely a Proporta problem, many other iPhone case manufaturers have the same problem with the white iPhone. Besides, its barely noticeable.

Aside from the leather made Shine Case which is a bit too bulky for my taste, the two hard cases do not give me the sense of bulkiness at all. They are just thick enough for you to know they are there protecting your phone but not to the point where you feel your phone got fatter.

    The style:
I cannot really comment much about the Shine Case since its obviously aimed towards the ladies with its red leather and floral casing. But it feels a bit too old school for my taste but its obviously looks subjective. Flip it open you there is a mirror tucked just below the top leather layer. Alternatively, it can be swapped out with anything from credit card to driver’s license or any other card that fits. When I looked into the mirror (no I was not trying to put make up on!) I felt like the mirror makes my face narrower, is that purposely designed so the ladies can look narrower than they really are? :)

The Ted Baker Hard Shell Case II has a pretty nice design, specially the one I got, which is the Garden Print with its garden + abstract patterns. If you like abstract and/or nature things then you might be interested in checking this one out. And the bottom has a nice semi-shiny name plate with Ted Baker engraved on it which I thought was a nice touch. I did not know who Ted Baker was but after some quick Googling I do now.

Now onto my favorite Doodle Pad case, I just love it for its simplicity. It is nothing fancy and it does not have to be. It is also the cheapest one among all three. The doodle drawings just bring back my a lot of my childhood memories with all these childish drawings and phrases like “I AM COOL”, “Hiya” etc. On top of that, it looks great on the white iPhone with its white paper background. I think it would be too much of a contrast if you were to put it on a black iPhone but its just a matter of personal taste.

    The feel:
I’ve always had the impression that shiny or glossy things are slippery but I find the Shine Case’s shiny leather exterior easy to grab and does not feel slippery. The other two cases, as the names suggested, are hard cases and feel sturdy. I love the rubbery feel when holding them with more than enough grip that should minimize the chance of dropping it. Now that I have the Doodle Pad case, my phone should have no problem staying in my pants’ pocket while I drive with all the grip. Last thing I want is for my phone to drop out of the car and onto some hard concrete floor when I get out of it.

All in all I think Proporta makes pretty good quality cases. You will agree with me as soon as you grab one in your hands. I highly recommend the Ted Baker series and the Doodle Pad. Specially the Doodle Pad if you have a white iPhone.

  • My frustration with Yellow Pages 360 Solution
By admin on October 25th, 2011 | No Comments Comments

This actually happened to my friend and I thought it would be useful to others looking into Yellow Pages 360 Solution. So long story short, my friend signed up for the Virtual Business Profile and within a day or so he got a call from a Yellow Pages sales rep. Everything SEEMED fine, a logo and a short phrase were given to Yellow Pages (to the sales rep) through email and the sales rep replied saying he got the needed info. That was pretty much the end of the conversation there. For weeks my friend had been emailing the sales rep’s email directly (which is actually from another company idimpact.net on behalf of Yellow Pages) as well as the Yellow Pages email LearnMore@ypg.com and never got a single reply. He was trying to get confirmation of what he was paying for, specifically the headings for his business (headings are used for how people will find you, like search categories) before committing to anything. Then weeks later, he got an email from another sales rep saying his original sales rep was on vacation and the order would be processed the next month (it was near the end of the month so fair enough).

In between, my friend also called again and actually got a hold of the sales rep and the sales rep said he did not get any emails from my friend. What a load of garbage. So he’s been sending emails to that same email and all of a sudden he stopped getting them? Give me (my friend rather) a break!

Sure enough, his order was processed without sending any form of confirmation of the order details. The details were sent AFTER it was processed as in he was charged already. He saw that one of the headings weren’t that fit for his business so he sent another batch of emails to have it changed to something else and not to his surprise, none were replied until after another few weeks. The original sales rep replied back saying it could not be changed but the sales rep never suggested the one my friend wanted which was much more fitting for his business. The sales rep then replied telling him to call the customer service, apparently he gave him the wrong number to call but the person from that wrong number (still part of Yellow Pages just not the customer service the sales rep said would be) was nice enough to follow up with the sales rep again and with the customer service. But my friend did not hear a single word back from them. None of the emails were replied, called the real customer service number with no body picking up.

This is rather disappointing, from a pretty established advertising company. Perhaps its not Yellow Pages’ fault but ID Impact Inc? One thing for sure, my friend felt that he got ripped for the rest of the year (you have to sign up for a year, signing up for anything less will cost you the same) and will certain not go back to them. I won’t for sure after hearing this. The customer support is basically nonexistent.

  • Rage for PC – texture flickering fix
By admin on October 15th, 2011 | No Comments Comments

I was so happy when I finally got to play Rage after all the wait. I got the PC version of it instead of for the console. As soon as I started the game I was greeted by a pretty good movie intro which got me even more hyped up. As soon as the movie ends the flickering appeared all over the place, it got even worse as soon as I stepped out of the waste land area. I was disappointed but was determined to find the fix for it. After I updated my ATI 5670HD video card driver the problem still persisted. I was so close to giving up when I stumbled upon this on Google – The RAGE Megathread, one of the users posted a “preview” version of the latest ATI driver. I downloaded it and gave it a try while telling myself this might not work either. After I restarted my computer as prompted. I started the game for the third or forth time, to my surprised it actually was working with absolutely no screen tearing or flickering at all. Thank you InnocentCriminal from that thread!

Then again, shouldn’t this game be tested properly on PC before releasing? This is pretty bad, considering it was produced by Id Soft, the maker of the all time classic Doom? Oh the name of this game makes this whole situation ironic.
